In January 6 Fellows of the Academy were at the Awards Ceremony of the United Nations World Tourism Organization in Madrid where long standing Fellow, Valene Smith became the 14th Ulysses Laureate. She was presented with the medal by the newly appointed Secretary General, Zurab Pololikashvili. Other Fellows attending were previous Ulysses Laureates: David Airey, Eduardo Fayos Sola, Don Hawkins and Jafar Jafari as well as one of the most recently elected Fellows, Susanne Becken.
In February David Airey took part in the PhD workshop at the annual Conference of CAUTHE which this year was organised by the Newcastle Business School of the University of Newcastle in Australia.

Donald Hawkins
The GW Tourism Innovation Lab is managed by the GW International Institute of Tourism Studies (IITS) in the GW School of Business. IITS was founded by Professor Hawkins in 1988 as a cooperative venture of GW and the World Tourism Organization.
The 2017 GW Tourism Innovation Lab Challenge was focused on community based tourism, and supported by the Ministry of Tourism in Jamaica. The 2018 Challenge will focus on Adventure Travel & Sports and is supported by the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority.
To support the adventure tourism development goals of the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority and promote the region's tourism offering to a global audience, the George Washington University International Institute of Tourism Studies will design and launch of the 2018 Ras Al Khaimah's Adventure Travel & Sports Innovation Challenge. The GW annual challenge is designed to discover, test, and scale breakthrough tourism related innovations to improve the quality of the tourist experience and demonstrate how sustainable tourism can support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The 2018 Challenge will be designed as an online incentivized prize competition that engages university students from around the world to identify and develop innovative strategies and tactics for developing adventure tourism in the priority region(s) of Ras Al Khaimah through specialized adventure related events. Student teams will be introduced to the tourism assets and potential of the region and challenged to identify international adventure events, such as sport competitions, that could be either invited or replicated in the Ras Al Khaimah region. By focusing on an event strategy for showcasing and developing the adventure tourism potential of the region, the student teams will help identify strategies that will introduce the adventure tourism potential of Ras Al Khaimah to the world. The challenge is designed to identify creative strategies, catalyze action, and create global awareness of the destination.

Chris Ryan
Chris returned from two months in the UK in mid-December to New Zealand and enjoyed the Christmas period. In early February he was spotted driving a single seater racing car (Formula Challenge) around the Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park in Taupo, and I could pretend that it was a research project for adventure tourism - but that would not be true. Apart from that he has been doing some research writing and by February 2018 had two articles accepted for publication later in the year. Being in the southern hemisphere he also practiced being a 'beach bum' on the basis of one cannot be a tourism scholar without any experience of the beach, relaxing, and swimming in the sea! In short, not a wholly productive period but a time of relaxation. Oh yes, and by mid-February he had dealt with 157 new submissions for 'Tourism Management'!
Allan Williams
Award
Allan Williams and Cristina Figueroa Domecq have been awarded an EU Marie Sklodowska-Curie fellowship of 195,000 euro to research women entrepreneurs in tourism. Cristina will join the Surrey staff on a two-year full time research contract, and will also collaborate with Anna de Jong and Albert Kimbu.
