Brian King
Brian's school role has changed from Associate Dean (Industry Partnership and Executive Education) to Associate Dean (Academic Affairs). The Academic Affairs role involves responsibility for our undergraduate and postgraduate students. In attempting to be balanced beyond academic activities I was soloist in a bassoon concerto (by Mozart) with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Orchestra in Shenzhen, China. The audience (1,300) was considerably bigger than in any of my academic presentations!

Chris Ryan
Currently Chris is continuing with the UNWTO initiative he established at Raglan, New Zealand. Surveys have been completed on residents and visitors, and in 2018 work was done with reference to the links between tourism and waste management, Maori and Airbnb. The issues surrounding the renting of accommodation during the summer gave rise to an externally funded research project on housing requirements in Raglan. It is anticipated that in the second half of 2018 research articles will be written seeking publication. Thus far, apart from reports for local stakeholders, from an academic perspective all that has been written is a chapter for a book on destination management being edited by Dogan Gursoy.
In terms of the China-New Zealand Tourism Research Unit, a number of projects have been progressing and some early initial results were provided at the APEC-Chrie conference hosted by Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou in May. These papers included initial results on visitor surveys at the Terracotta Warriors Museum (with Chen Hui and Heng Ho), the Fuxi Mausoleum at Taihau (with Zhang Xiaoyu), differences between Greater China regions in visitation to Macau (with Veronica Lok Lam), impacts of tourism on Anhui villages (with Mary-Anne Ramos Tumanan) and perceptions of risk by Chinese adventure tourist (with Li Ping). Again we have reached the stage when reports have been completed and it is now time to commence writing academic papers. In addition, with Zhang Xiaoyu data are again being collected with reference to visitation at Grand View Gardens, Beijing.

In addition Chris was selected to be an honorary consultant to the Dream of the Red Mansion Museum at Grand View Gardens, Beijing for his work on Chinese culture and tourism. In addition similar recognition including an honorary position at the Wuxi Mausoleum for his work on Chinese culture, heritage and tourism is also being prepared for a ceremony in September.

Geoff Wall
Geoff's President's Fellowship has been renewed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. This will enable him to continue to work on aspects of tourism and heritage in Xinjiang. An English version of a World Heritage nomination document on the Taklamakan Desert was recently completed.
In the next few days, a co-authored (with Anne Lee) book entitled "Rural Tourism Development through a Creative Food Economy (Lambert) will be published.
Geoff continues to work with Chinese collaborators , particularly on aspects natural and built heritage and affected communities (primarily with Dr. Su Ming Ming), on museums and family tourism (particularly with Dr. Wu Maoying) and on a variety of topics with colleagues at Sun yat-Sen University. He will deliver a keynote address at a China-Asean forum in Xiamen in July.
