This is to officially announce the 2012 round of nominations of candidates for Academy Fellowship. Any Fellow of the Academy is entitled to nominate a person for membership. The Executive Committee requests that fellows note the following:
Academy membership is an honour to be bestowed on only a small proportion of tourism scholars. Members should nominate only those candidates whom they consider to be outstanding scholars. They should not feel pressured to nominate anyone about whom they may have reservations. After our experience last time round, when only a small number of those nominated were endorsed by the Academy for membership, it is important that we all reflect carefully on whom we nominate and the contribution that they will make to our ranks.
Fellows may wish to consider limiting their nominees to only one person (or none)
Fellows may wish to jointly nominate a candidate and, indeed, our new procedures require that all those nominated are endorsed by two Fellows.
The nomination process is fairly simple. Five (5) items of information are required to be submitted:
A letter from the first nominator indicating the candidate’s suitability for fellowship of the Academy.
A letter of support from a seconder, reiterating the merits of the candidate asa potential Fellow of the Academy
Fellowship Nomination Form which can be accessed from our website www.tourismscholars.org
This form provides an opportunity for the nominator and the candidate to identify, in brief summary, the candidate’s impact or contribution to tourism research and scholarship, and contribution to the profession. The fellow is encouraged to discuss such impacts and contribution with the candidate to ensure the comprehensiveness of the information given in this form.
The Candidate’s updated Curriculum Vitae
Three examples of the candidates work.
All nomination materials are to be submitted by the nominator electronically to the Secretariat no later than September 30, 2012.
Candidates will be invited, at their own expense, to attend the Biennial meeting of the Academy to be held in the Algarve, 2nd to 7th June 2013. At this conference they will be given the opportunity to make a presentation (20 minutes) summarizing their research contribution to date and future research directions.
Voting by the full Academy membership will take place a short time after the conference.
Nominations for ‘Emerging Scholar’ Award
The idea is to recognise the emerging talent in our field which can be nurtured over time to enhance the quality of international tourism research and scholarship. The scholar must be (a) ten years or less out of their doctoral degree and (b) be exceptional in their tourism research contributions to date. A maximum of three scholars will be invited to attend the Academy Conference.
The nomination process is fairly simple. Four (4) items of information are required to be submitted:
A letter from the nominator indicating the person’s suitability for nomination as ‘an emerging scholar of distinction’.
The Nomination Form which can be accessed from our website
All nomination materials are to be submitted by the nominator electronically to the Secretariat no later than September 30, 2012. A committee appointed by the Executive will review applications. The nominator will be informed of the outcome.

The award winners will be invited, at their own expense, to attend the Biennial meeting of the Academy to be held in he Algarve, 2nd to 7th June 2013. At this conference they will be given the opportunity to make a presentation (20 minutes) on a selected aspect of their current research.
On a personal note, the Fellows of the Academy, elected me to your Executive on a platform of a commitment to working towards greater diversity in our membership and transparency in the selection process. I hope to bring forward proposals to help us achieve these aims in the near future and hope that you will endorse them through our 2012 nomination process.
