Streetlight systems are expensive to operate and maintain, especially in a city that never sleeps like Hong Kong. Typically, they use up to 40% of a city’s electricity spending. As streetlights stand outdoors all day, it’s a great idea to make use of the sunlight that they are exposed to during the day, to brighten up the city after dark.

To make the best use of solar energy, Professor Eric Cheng, Department of Electrical Engineering, developed an LED streetlight with solar-tracking system that swivels and turns the solar panels to pick up the most sunlight anytime of the day. His high-efficiency LED lighting system coupled with advanced thermal design also boasts higher charging efficiency and longer battery life. The battery, when fully charged, lasts well for days of illumination.
