Integrating Language Education with Advanced Technology

3 Feb 2025

In the world where Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) technologies are becoming increasingly prominent, educators have been striving to adopt the latest technologies into their pedagogy in the hope of improving their students’ levels of proficiency in not just the subject area but also the advanced technologies.

Ms Sarah WONG, IHERD Fellow, and her three team members are no exception. They are dedicated to harness the power of new technologies in Chinese language education, aiming to make valuable contributions towards enhancing and supporting the integration of humanities and technology in teaching, learning, and research. They focused on achieving three outcomes, including

  1. Improving Chinese Language Proficiency (Verbal and Non-Verbal)

Ms WONG’s team acknowledges the crucial role of students' language proficiency in optimizing outcomes with AI tools, and is planning to use SORA, a potent text-to-video AI tool, to produce dynamic videos, which would foster effective communication skills through interactive content creation.

  2. Advancing Pedagogical Techniques

Through meticulous planning, they have identified desired learning outcomes that emphasize technology's role in enhancing Chinese language skills across reading, writing, listening, speaking, and integrated domains. Instructional methods and assessments have been aligned with the identified learning outcomes.

  3. Integrating Humanities and Technology in Research

Ms WONG’s team has also been conducting efficacy studies on their new pedagogies. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to capture comprehensive data for data analysis in the near future.

Ms WONG’s team was recognised for their contributions in enhancing the integration of humanities and technology in education or research by Faculty of Humanities with Faculty Award for Integration of Technology and Humanities (FAITH) 2023-24. They were encouraged by the award, and would continue their endeavours in integrating humanities and technology.
