Dr Julia CHEN, Senior Fellow and the Director of the Educational Development Centre (EDC), along with her two EDC colleagues, Dr Dawn LO and Mr Leo CHON, had the opportunity to showcase their work on promoting and analysing the incorporation of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in assessment at the Digital Learning Week held at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris in early September 2024. As UNESCO’s annual flagship event, the Digital Learning Week 2024 featured over 170 speakers from more than 50 countries, including ministers, policymakers, digital education leaders, researchers and practitioners from various organisations and private sectors.
Dr CHEN’s team presented their work on “Redesigning and implementing GenAI-expected assessment: Strategies developed, features implemented, good practices and teacher development”, showcasing the University’s stance and commitment to supporting teachers and students in embracing GenAI for assessment. Drawing on an analysis of 70 redesigned assessment tasks collected from various departments, the team highlighted several key approaches to assessment redesign and four common dilemmas faced by teachers in the process. Teacher professional development was also featured, including enhancement in teacher AI competency, understanding of student perceptions of GenAI, and knowledge of assessment redesign strategies.
Beyond sharing their expertise and findings with a global audience, Dr CHEN’s team was very pleased to have had the opportunity to learn about the work of educators and policymakers in other countries on their digital learning endeavours, and to engage in the global dialogue regarding the possibilities for digital technologies to transform education.
Dr CHEN’s leadership in the field was further recognised by being invited to pen two articles for Times Higher Education (THE)’s Campus+ and was featured in a THE podcast. See https://www.timeshighereducation.com/campus/authors/julia-chen. She was an invited speaker at THE’s Digital Universities Asia in July this year and at a recent Turnitin Forum on AI in Education and Assessment in September.
