Digital Literacy Workshop with 135 Newly Arrived Migrant Domestic Workers

On September 24, 2024, Dr. Jeffry Oktavianus, Assistant Professor from the Department of English and Communication, conducted a digital literacy workshop for 135 newly arrived migrant domestic workers at the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Hong Kong. In this session, participants were introduced to online misinformation, disinformation, and scams commonly encountered on digital platforms. Through interactive discussions and practical demonstrations, participants learned essential tools and techniques to help them recognize and protect themselves from deceptive online content. The workshop provided an accessible approach to complex topics, ensuring that everyone left with valuable, practical skills they could use in their everyday lives.

Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing a newfound confidence in navigating digital spaces. A majority of attendees felt the workshop gave them practical information they could apply immediately, and they reported feeling better equipped to identify and avoid online misinformation. The workshop’s impact is evident: one participant shared that the session “enhanced my knowledge and helped me stay safe and avoid online misinformation,” while others emphasized how they became more informed online. These responses highlight the workshop’s success in fostering digital resilience and empowering migrant domestic workers with the tools to protect themselves in the digital world.


Social Media and AI Strategies Workshop for Migrant Worker Leaders and Organizations

 

On September 14, 2024, Dr. Jeffry Oktavianus, Assistant Professor in the Department of English and Communication, led a workshop on social media and AI strategies in collaboration with the Indonesian Diaspora Network. Held at the PolyU campus, the workshop brought together over 20 peer leaders from the migrant domestic worker community and members from various organizations. Through interactive sessions, participants explored effective social media strategies for connecting and communicating with the migrant community, including tips for crafting resonant messages. Moreover, they were introduced to AI-powered tools that simplify content creation, allowing them to produce engaging, relevant materials tailored to their audiences.

The workshop received excellent feedback, with participants highlighting how it enriched their skills and confidence in social media and AI use. Survey results reflected a strong positive response, as attendees agreed that the information was directly applicable to their work and enhanced their ability to engage with the migrant community. One NGO member shared, “After the training, I better understand how to strategize social media use and the tools available to create content.” These responses underscore the workshop’s success in fostering digital skills to support effective health communication and strengthening connections within the migrant worker community.
