Smart IT tips for researchers to work from home on research projects

More research staff and students are now working from home on their research projects amid the pandemic period. To enable researchers to work at home, here are some smart IT tips:

A. Off-campus Access to Pilot HPC Platform

The Pilot High Performance Computing (HPC) Platform allows PolyU research staff and students to test or develop their applications for research purpose. While off-campus, researchers can still use the following channels to access the platform anytime:

  • Virtual Student Computer Centre (vSCC) – students only
  • SSL VPN (Virtual Private Network) - staff and research students

B. IT Consultation Service

1-on-1 online consultation on IT advice and support for research is available to support researchers working from home. Research staff and students can meet our IT specialist online to discuss IT needs through Skype/ MS Teams. The consultation service is available from 2pm to 6pm on weekdays. To reserve a 1 hour session, simply make an appointment via booking system.


C. IT Support Website for Researchers


A one-stop website ‘IT Support for Research’ has been launched for researchers. It includes platforms and services such as Pilot HPC, University Research Facility in Big Data Analytic (UBDA), Gitlab etc., upcoming training workshops on programming languages (Python, R and etc.) and self-learning material on programming and applications development.
