Safe, flexible and recoverable X-ray protective products
X-rays are considered carcinogenic by World Health Organization. Healthcare professionals and those at border crossings operating scanners on a daily basis may have serious health problems arising from long-term exposure. Therefore, the team invented a novel shielding textile which is safer to use, lighter in weight and more eco-friendly in processing and disposal than conventional lead rubber.
The team chose metal tungsten to make the novel shielding material because tungsten is one of the densest metal with excellent X-ray absorbency, and it can be effectively blended with plastics to produce a green material with better shielding attenuations than lead.
