A study published in the Virology Journal found that the coronavirus can survive on common surfaces such as glass, stainless steel, and money for up to 28 days. The virus can survive on food and high-touch surfaces after a person infected with sneezes, coughs on the surface or touches it, and it can travel when transported among countries, cities and varies locations.
Antimicrobial Coating is one of the methods to prevent the growth, and spread of bacteria and virus on surfaces and other high-touch areas. Commercially available antimicrobial coatings are predominantly silver, copper, titanium dioxide, and antibiotics. However, the potential cytotoxicity of the chemical-based nanoparticles coatings are still of serious concern. As evidence shows, it may be harmful if used regularly or over a long period of time.
Our research products focus on Bio-based antimicrobial coatings that are safer and greener solutions to prevent microbial growth on the surface. We are a University technology start-up by University’s Professor and Students. The company is funded by HKx Foundation and PolyU InnoHub focus on Biopolymer-based coatings applications.
