PolyU and Ganzhou sign strategic collaborative framework agreements to deepen research collaboration between the two regions

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has partnered with Ganzhou Municipal Government and Xingguo County Government in Jiangxi province to capitalise on their strengthens and promote the high-quality development of the textile industry in Ganzhou and Hong Kong. Prof. Christopher CHAO, PolyU Vice President (Research and Innovation), led a delegation to participate in the “1st China (Ganzhou) Graphene cum Textile and Apparel and New Materials Industry Forum” on 19 March in Xingguo County, Ganzhou. At the event, Prof. Chao signed strategic collaborative framework agreement separately with Mr DOU Liangtan, Member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Ganzhou Municipal Committee and Vice Mayor of Ganzhou, and Mr LIU Zhanghong, Deputy Secretary of Xingguo County Party Committee and County Mayor of Xingguo, for the joint establishment of the PolyU-Xingguo Textiles Technology and Innovation Research Institute (the Institute) to promote in-depth and effective industry-university-research collaboration. The Institute will support the innovative development of the textile industry in Ganzhou and its counties, while creating further opportunities for PolyU in terms of education, research and translation of research into innovative outcomes in the field of textiles. Prof. Christopher Chao said, “By putting efforts into brand building, technology promotion, professional training and talent development, PolyU will make contributions to the advancement of the textile industry and market in Ganzhou and Xingguo County. The solicitation of business and projects will also facilitate investment and further collaborative opportunities. We will both fully leverage our respective strengths and join forces to create a new chapter in the textile industry.” PolyU possesses strong educational and research capabilities in the textiles field, which align with the development needs of Ganzhou’s textile industry in the areas of talent cultivation, research, industrial transformation and upgrading. The collaboration between PolyU, Ganzhou and Xingguo County and the establishment of the Institute will leverage the University’s expertise in talent, technology and research platforms, to support the enduring growth of local textile enterprises. The forum themed on “New Weave of New Graphene” gathered experts from universities, enterprises and industry in the fields of graphene and textiles from all over the country, to discuss research and industrial applications of graphene (also known as the King of New Materials). Dr Shou Dahua, Assistant Professor and Limin Endowed Young Scholar in Advanced Textiles Technologies of PolyU School of Fashion and Textiles introduced his research achievements in textiles and new materials at the Forum. On the same day, the country’s first Graphene Technology Museum was inaugurated in Xingguo County, to serve as a national hub for graphene innovation to translate research outcomes into new productive forces.

Visit by Delegation of Quanzhou government

A delegation led by Mr. ZHANG Yigong, the Communist Party Secretary of Quanzhou City, Secretary of Quanzhou Municipal Party Committee; Mr ZHOU Xiaohua, Secretary General of Quanzhou Municipal Party Committee; Mr ZHANG Wenxian, Member of the Standing Committee of Quanzhou Communist Party Committee and Communist Party Secretary of Jinjiang City visited PolyU on 23 March. The delegation was welcomed by Dr LAM Tai-fai, Council Chairman of PolyU; Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU and Prof. Wing-tak WONG, Deputy President and Provost of PolyU.  The PolyU-Jinjiang Technology and Innovation Research Institute (Research Institute) made a successful establishment in Jinjiang in early September last year. Being the first research institute established by PolyU beyond the Greater Bay Area, it has gained significant attention. Thanks to the strong support from various sectors of society, the Research Institute has experienced rapid development. PolyU hopes to leverage the strengths of both parties and to enhance technological collaboration with government entities and businesses. The goal is to foster technological innovation, facilitate the practical application of research findings, and strive for breakthroughs in research achievements. PolyU seeks to make substantial contributions to the economic prosperity of both regions, ultimately supporting the nation in attaining high-quality development.

Visit by Delegation of Wenzhou government

On 15 March 2024, a delegation led by Mr. Lu Bojun, Member of the Standing Committee of Wenzhou Communist Party Committee, Head of the Organization Department, and the Director of the Talent Office, visited The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). The delegation was welcomed by the Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU; Dr Miranda LOU, Executive Vice President of PolyU; Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU. The visit aimed at strengthening the communication and cooperation between Wenzhou and PolyU in the recruitment of high-level science, technology and innovation talents, establishing a strategic partnership in talent resource sharing and information exchange, and attracting more PolyU graduates to Wenzhou for employment and starting up business. Wenzhou signed an agreement with PolyU to establish a university talent workstation in PolyU. The two sides had a friendly communication. Prof. CHAO introduced the development of PolyU, the programme setting and the employment situation of graduates. Prof. Benny C. F. CHEUNG, Director of PolyU-Wenzhou Technology and Innovation Research Institute (Research Institute), introduced the technical direction, discipline leaders and preparations of the Research Institute to the delegation. Leaders of Wenzhou introduced the situation of Wenzhou city, industry, and talent scheme. In addition, Prof. CHAO and Mr. ZHANG Lei, Director of Wenzhou Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, signed the agreement of the university talent workstation. Mr. Lu conferred the plaque to PolyU. After the meeting, the delegation visited the exhibition showcasing the achievements of the PolyU-Wenzhou Technology and Innovation Research Institute in various directions, as well as the Ou embroidery exhibition. 

PolyU to establish research platform in Daya Bay

At the opening ceremony of the Pingshan River innovation and technology corridor, Prof. Wing-tak Wong, Deputy President and Provostof The Hong Kong Polytechnic University revealed that the University will set up a research platform in the Daya Bay Economic and Technological Development Zone to contribute to the development of the corridor.

PolyU and Zhongshan Municipal Government establish strategic agreement for research collaboration

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Zhongshan Municipal People’s Government have formed a cooperative framework agreement to enhance research and innovation development, fostering partnership among industries, academia, and research organisations in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. Prof. Wing-tak WONG, Deputy President and Provost of PolyU, along with Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation), Prof. Christina WONG, Director of Research and Innovation, and PolyU scholars attended the High-quality Development Conference in Zhongshan. Prof. CHAO signed the agreement during the event on 18 February. In delivering a speech at the event, Prof. WONG said PolyU will establish a strategic research platform with Zhongshan to drive innovation and technology development in fields such as chemical engineering and biomedicine. The agreement aims to foster research transformation, nurture talents, and strengthen cooperation among industries, academia and research organisations. PolyU will engage in collaboration with research organisations, governments and enterprises in Zhongshan, with a focus on biomedical technology and other fields. This partnership will facilitate cooperation in the biomedical industry in Hong Kong and Zhongshan, jointly promoting the development in China and overseas markets. With this strategic partnership, PolyU will be closely connected with Zhongshan to enhance industrial innovation and translational research, supporting the development of Zhongshan into a biomedical innovation centre. PolyU has two national state key laboratories, including the State Key Laboratory of Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University), which focuses on drug research and development. Their research projects have attained world-class standards, contributing to cutting-edge scientific discoveries.

Visit by Delegation of Wenzhou Municipal People’s Government

A delegation led by Mr. WANG Zhenyong, the Deputy Mayor of Wenzhou Municipal People's Government, visited the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) from January 23 to 24 to exchange views on deepening technological innovation cooperation between Hong Kong and Wenzhou. On January 23, the University’s senior management and researchers represented by Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU, had a discussion with the Wenzhou delegation on the PolyU-Wenzhou Technology and Innovation Research Institute (Research Institute), and the planning and construction of the Zhejiang (Hong Kong and Macao) High-tech Industrial Park. Subsequently, Prof. Tao YU, Associate Director of Research Institute for Sustainable Urban Development, and Dr Yu XIANG, Assistant Professor (Research) of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, led the delegation to visit the Industrial Centre Laboratory and introduced PolyU's achievements in new-material structural technologies for marine engineering. Dr Qiyao HUANG, Assistant Professor of the school of Fashion and Textiles, team of Prof. Zijian ZHENG, Associate Director of Research Institute for Intelligent Wearable Systems, introduced the Liquid-metal fiber mats and their applications in epidermal electronics and implantable electronics, as well as Textile lithium batteries. On the second day, under the guidance of Prof. KEE Chea-su, Head of School of Optometry and Prof. Benny C. F. CHEUNG, Director of State Key Laboratory of Ultra-precision Machining Technology (PolyU), the delegation visited the Centre for Eye and Vision Research and the State Key Laboratory of Ultra-precision Machining Technology (Hong Kong Science Park Branch), gaining insights into PolyU’s scientific research achievements and future development direction in cutting-edge technology fields. The State Key Laboratory of Ultra-precision Machining Technology (Hong Kong Science Park Branch) focuses on the development of ultra-precision machining equipment, precision measurement system, precision manufacturing technologies, as well as the development of core optical components for advanced optics, optometry and electronic products. On 9 November 2023, PolyU and the Wenzhou Municipal People's Government held a signing and unveiling ceremony at the Wenzhou People's Hall, marking the official landing of the PolyU-Wenzhou Technology and Innovation Research Institute, with the aim of promoting Wenzhou to become a key innovation and technology hub for entrepreneurs and talents. This visit will greatly promote the progress of the Research Institute and deepen the technological innovation cooperation between Wenzhou and Hong Kong.

Visit by Delegation of Quanzhou Municipal People’s Government

A delegation led by Mr. YAO Fei, Deputy Mayor of the Quanzhou Municipal People’s Government, visited PolyU on 17 January to exchange views on deepening collaboration between Hong Kong and Quanzhou in technology and innovation development. Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU, Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU and PolyU delegates warmly welcomed the delegation. Prof. Jin-Guang Teng introduced the University's research accomplishments and latest development. He anticipates that through in-depth collaboration with Quanzhou City, the of PolyU-Jinjiang Technology and Innovation Research Institute (Research Institute) will develop and flourish. Mr. Yao Fei stated in his speech that the Quanzhou Municipal People’s Government will fully support the development of the Research Institute. Jinjiang can provide fertile ground for the R&D of PolyU, facilitating the transformation of scientific research projects. He expressed anticipation for further cooperation between the two sides in petrochemicals, pharmaceutical industry, and industrial design.  This collaboration aims to promote scientific and technological innovation in Quanzhou city, injecting new vitality into its economic and social development. Prof. YU Changyuan, the Director of PolyU-Jinjiang Technology and Innovation Research Institute, introduced the development and future plans of the Research Institute to the delegation.  During the meeting, both parties reached a consensus on strengthening cooperation further, which has a great significance for promoting the development of Research Institute.

PolyU received a delegation from Hubei Government

A delegation led by Ms ZHANG Xiaomei, the Director of Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the Hubei Provincial People's Government visited PolyU on 18 December. The delegates were received by Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) and members of PolyU. Discussions were held to review the major collaboration projects including the establishment of the PolyU-Wuhan Technology and Innovation Research Institute (Research Institute) and the joint laboratory between PolyU and Wuhan University of Technology. Both sides expected that the Research Institute will serve as a platform to further facilitate the technology innovation, technology transfer and talent development to a new level with national and international vision, and contribute to the Nation's high-quality development with breakthrough research results. The delegation also visited the University Library to learn about its modern facilities and systematic user services. In October, PolyU and Wuhan Municipal Government had signed a framework agreement to establish PolyU - Wuhan Technology and Innovation Research Institute, marking the official launch of the significant industry-academic-research cooperation between PolyU and Hubei Province.

Visit by Delegation of Fujian government

A delegation led by Mr. LIN Ruiliang, Vice Governor of Fujian Provincial People’s Government visited PolyU on 18 December to exchange views on deepening collaboration between Hong Kong and Fujian on technology and innovation development. Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU; Prof. Wing-tak WONG, Deputy President and Provost of PolyU and Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU welcomed the delegation, comprised of Mr. LIN Ruiliang, Vice Governor of Fujian Provincial People’s Government, Mr. CHENG Qiang, Director of Civil Affairs Department of Fujian Province; Mr. SHI Huicai, Chief Engineer of Industry and Information Technology of Fujian Province; Mr. ZHANG Dingfeng, Deputy Mayor of Fuzhou Municipal Government, and other senior officials. Prof. Jin-Guang TENG highlighted PolyU’s latest development in his speech including the university ranking, leading research areas and new remarkable achievement. He expressed PolyU’s dedication to promoting innovative technology and its societal application in conjunction with industrial development for the benefit of society. The University looks forward to collaborating with the Fujian Provincial Government in expanding the scope of partnership from Jinjiang to various regions within the Fujian Province. Mr LIN Ruiliang stated that Fujian has strong private enterprises in the traditional garment, footwear, electrical, and chemical industries. In the future, the Fujian Government will accelerate the development of the digital economy, maritime economy, sustainable economy and cultural and tourism economy. Through this meeting, both sides have deepened mutual understanding and established a solid foundation for future cooperation. During the meeting, the two parties reviewed the progress of the PolyU-Jinjiang Technology and Innovation Research Institute (Research Institute) and exchanged views on laboratory management, collaboration with leading enterprises, and the recruitment of global professionals to contribute to Fujian’s development. Prof. YU Changyuan, Professor of Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of PolyU, who has been appointed as the Dean of the Research Institute, also gave a brief introduction to the delegation. Members from the Research Institute also joined the discussion and devised future collaboration plans between Jinjiang and Hong Kong.

PolyU joins hands with Hangzhou and Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province to build innovation platforms for advancing technologies and cultural tourism

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has teamed up with Hangzhou and Wenzhou, two major cities in Zhejiang Province, to build innovation platforms for advanced technology and innovation, as well as cultural tourism, with a view to deepening their collaborations with Hong Kong. The signing and unveiling ceremony of the PolyU-Wenzhou Technology and Innovation Research Institute (the Institute) was held at the Wenzhou People’s Congress Hall on 9 November, marking the official landing of the Institute in Wenzhou. The Institute strives to foster technological innovation, talent cultivation, and research and development (R&D), developing Wenzhou into an innovation and technology (I&T) hub. Separately, PolyU signed agreements with the Wenzhou Municipal People’s Government and the Administration Committee of Wenzhou Bay New Area. Witnessed by Dr LAM Tai-fai, Council Chairman of PolyU; Mr ZHANG Zhenfeng, Secretary of Wenzhou Municipal Party Committee; Mr GE Yiping, Director of the Standing Committee of Wenzhou Municipal People’s Congress; and Mr CHEN Zuorong, Chairman of the Wenzhou Municipal People’s Political Consultative Conference, the agreement at the municipal level was signed by Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU and Mr WANG Zhenyong, Vice-Mayor of Wenzhou Municipal People’s Government; while at district level it was signed by Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyUand Mr ZHOU Yi-fu, Secretary of the Longwan District Committee of Wenzhou Municipal People’s Government. PolyU is the first university in Hong Kong to collaborate with Wenzhou Municipal People’s Government in setting up a technology and innovation research institute in Wenzhou. The Institute aims to promote I&T development in the Southeastern coastal region, in response to the industrial development needs of Wenzhou and Zhejiang Province specifically, and the Nation more broadly. The Institute will engage in close collaborations with local key industries in the areas of marine engineering equipment and technology, flexible electronics, and ultra-precision manufacturing to advance their core technologies, outcome transformation, talent development, and innovation and entrepreneurship, promoting the high-quality economic development of the cites. In his speech, Dr LAM Tai-fai emphasised that PolyU values research and innovation, actively promoting the transformation of research outcomes into practical applications, and believes the joint establishment of the Institute holds great promise. With its strong research capabilities and a pool of world-class scholars, the University provides a solid foundation for deep collaboration between Hong Kong and Wenzhou, which has a thriving private economy with a solid industrial foundation with hardworking and innovative talents. PolyU will further leverage its advantages in talents, academia, research, and internationalisation, while captalising on Wenzhou’s industrial clusters, innovation, talent cultivation, and R&D services to explore new methods, concepts, and perspectives in research for accelerating the transformation and application of research achievements as well as driving industrial upgrading. This innovation platform will serve as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation with various stakeholders in Wenzhou in terms of talent attraction, innovation ecosystem, cultural inheritance and exchange, making greater contributions to high-quality regional development. Mr ZHANG Zhenfeng stated that innovation is in Wenzhou’s genes. In recent years, Wenzhou has always kept in mind the earnest instructions from General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Xi Jinping to continue writing the history of innovation. Wenzhou is determined to take the path of innovation-driven development by enhancing its capabilities for innovation, developing strategic innovation platforms and introducing university-industry research collaboration platforms. The cooperation with PolyU is perfectly timed, at the right place and with the right people. The Institute will become a powerful engine to develop Wenzhou into a nationally innovative city, a new force in fostering two industrial clusters with output valued at the trillion-yuan level, and a bridge to connect to global innovation resources. It will help enhance Wenzhou’s competitiveness in technological innovation, shape new trends in industrial development, and attract innovative international talents. Wenzhou will do its best to provide efficient services to ensure the smooth operation and development of the Institute. The PolyU delegation not only introduced the Institute’s development plan and presented a research showcase of the latest technology achievements for local enterprises, but also made visits to local universities. Moving forward, the two parties will stive to strengthen cooperation in technology, as well as promote academic and cultural exchanges between Wenzhou and Hong Kong to achieve a win-win outcome. Previously, the PolyU-Hangzhou Technology and Innovation Research Institute was also officially launched with a signing and unveiling ceremony on 7 November, in Hangzhou. The Institute aspires to promote advanced technology in the fields of Grand Canal culture and tourism, intelligent transportation and medical aesthetics, and will initially establish three research centres, namely the Grand Canal Culture and Tourism Research Center, Intelligent Rail Transit Center, and Digital Medical Aesthetics Research Center. These centres will collaborate with Hangzhou’s key industries and university research institutes in information technology and internet, cultural tourism, smart cities, biomedicine, and high-end equipment manufacturing, providing exchange platforms for researchers, technology innovation services for local enterprises, as well as application scenarios for cutting-edge PolyU technologies. Identified as one of the important provinces for national panning, Zhejiang province has been committed to promoting the coordinated development of education, technology and the economy. The establishment of the two new research institutes aims to build closer ties between Hong Kong and the two cities, bringing together innovative talents and resources. It also seeks to strengthen industry-university research collaborations and connect local industries with international markets, so as to develop Zhejiang into a dynamic and innovation-driven hub and make a meaningful contribution to the Nation’s technological innovation and cultural tourism development.
