Photonics is a major branch of science and has been playing a major role in 21st century technological advancement. It is the underpinning technology for our broadband wired and wireless networks and has also been widely used in sensing, energy, nanotech, imaging, advanced manufacturing and biomedical applications.
PolyU has a long track record of research excellence in exploring photonic technology for optical communications, sensing, energy, imaging and other biomedical applications. We collaborate extensively with Industry leading to numerous research breakthroughs, technology commercialization and spin-off companies. Important strides in the basic understanding of light and optical devices are also no strangers to the PolyU community over the past decade.
The establishment of the Photonics Research Institute in May 2021 has provided a platform for colleagues from different faculties and departments to carry out interdisciplinary research in the area of photonics. It also enables us to explore the synergy between the fundamental sciences and various engineering applications of light. We welcome colleagues and collaborators around the world to work together to make important advances in the fundamental knowledge of photonics and develop new technology applications. We aspire to establish PolyU as an Asia-Pacific hub for University-Industry collaboration and spin-offs in optics for the benefit of Hong Kong, China and the World.
