(1) Smart Elderly Home is an area for translational research of gerontechnology. It provides a simulated living environment of a single elderly. Researchers can utilize the area to test gerontechnology products in realistic settings. The latest research products are:
1. Intelligent bright light for dementia – improve sleep quality for the elderly with dementia
2. Automatic windows – motorized windows with voice control without physical effort to open/shut the windows
3. Automatic water tap – shutdown water tap automatically to avoid flooding due to forgetfulness
4. eNightLog – detect bedside activities while sleeping to prevent fall or wandering
5. One-stop home control – an integrated platform to integrate IoT devices without using a lot of apps in mobile devices
6. Fall detection – detect the fall accident of the elderly based on camera image
(2) The Assistive Technology Laboratory is located at the 8th floor of the ST core of PolyU with a total floor space of 92 square metres. It has 3 functional rooms and 2 functional areas, dedicated to different areas of research - the Neuromodulation Research Laboratory, the Brain Stimulation Laboratory, and the Assistive Technology Products and Technical Workshop, a functional area for displaying assistive products, and another area for robotic therapy and upper-limb motion studies. The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities including robots (e.g. end-effectors and exoskeletons for physical rehabilitation, social robots for psychosocial rehabilitation), a brain-computer interface (BCI) system, brain modulation devices such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), neurofeedback and electroencephalogram (EEG) systems, and a portable motion capture system.
