PolyU Chinese Culture Festival 2024 - International Forum, Exhibition, Public Lectures and workshop on Chinese Culture and its Modernisation: Yan Fu's Legacy

  As one of the activities of the PolyU Chinese Culture Festival, International Forum, Exhibition and Public Lectures on Chinese Culture and its Modernisation: Yan Fu’s Legacy were successfully held from 25 Nov to 12 Dec. The event was organised by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, co-organised by Fujian YanFu Academic Research Association, Fujian Chuanzheng Culture Management Committee and Fujian Culture & Economy Exchange Center.   The International Forum has invited 23 scholars from 18 institutions across Hong Kong, Mainland China and overseas, including academia from Heidelberg University in Germany, Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales in France, Kansai University and Niigata University of International and Information Studies in Japan, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Beijing Normal University, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Xiamen University and Fujian Normal University etc. During the forum, the scholars engaged in academic exchanges and deeply explored the value of YAN Fu’s patriotic thoughts in constructing contemporary Chinese culture. By inheriting YAN Fu’s spirit of bringing the world into China and letting China go to the world, the Forum promoted the dissemination and promotion of Chinese culture and its modernisation in Hong Kong and the world.   The Exhibition focused on Yan Fu's contribution to the transformation of modern Chinese culture in modern times, explored his impact on China's self-improvement and reform spirit, and developed his role in patriotism, enlightenment education and the integration of Chinese and Western cultures; promoted Yan Fu's “patriotism, self-improvement, courage to innovate, and courage to challenge, his spirit of continuous self-improvement, defying hardships, and breaking through limitations”. These could inspire university students to dare to break through traditions and challenge difficulties, allow everyone to reflect on how historical figures made innovative thinking in the face of great changes in the times, thereby gaining inspiration and tempering their spirit to face challenges and apply them to modern academic research and social practice.   Three public lectures were held throughout the event. The invited speakers shared their research on the impact of Yan Fu’s thoughts on modern China.   The workshop was led by Ms Huang Yunqing from the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies, Faculty of Humanities, PolyU. Participants used different calligraphy styles to write on the lion's head. The second “Tsinghua University, the University of Macau and PolyU tripartite exchange programme” was successfully held

The second “Tsinghua University, the University of Macau and PolyU tripartite exchange programme” was successfully held at Tsinghua University from July 8 to 12, 2024. The five-day and four-night programme provided a cultural exchange platform for students to enhance their understanding and perception of the Chinese traditional culture and improve their cultural accomplishment through academic discussions and cultural visits. This year’s exchange programme was organised by Tsinghua University and co-organised by PolyU and UM. About 50 students from different departments of the three universities participated. This year, PolyU is led by Dr Lam Tai-fai, Chairman of the PolyU's Council and Chairman of the Advisory Committee of The Research Centre for Chinese History and Culture, and Prof. HAN Qi, Dr ZHAO Yi and Dr LAU Kai Yiu from the Department of Chinese History and Culture. Apart from attending keynote speeches, students from the three Universities were asked to conduct academic exchange, jointly guided by teachers from the three Universities. During the exchange, students were required to present their papers (3000-5000 words) by giving a 15-minute individual presentation. Other participating students were free to give comments and discuss together. Despite broadening their academic horizons, teachers and students also conducted several field trips, such as visiting the Badaling Ancient Great Wall, Summer Palace, Yuanmingyuan and Tiananmen Square, etc. Not only promoting Chinese culture, we hope the on-site visits could strengthen national education and enhance students’ pride and sense of belonging to the Nation.   Dr Lam Tai-fai mentioned at the opening ceremony of the exchange programme: “We will continue establishing close partnerships with Tsinghua University and the University of Macau. In addition to the academic exchange camp, we hope to develop cooperation in education, research and innovation. PolyU Chinese Culture Festival 2024 - Artwork Exhibition co-organised with Tiangong University

To promote and enhance awareness and appreciation of China's rich cultural heritage among youngsters, PolyU is organising a Chinese Culture Festival in 2024, which is also one of the celebrations of the 30th anniversary of PolyU’s renaming. The Festival is set to launch a series of events from March 2024, covering different art forms and themes. The first event featured a 2-week-long artwork exhibition organised by PolyU and co-organised by Tiangong University's International Innovation Center of Chinese Traditional Culture and Artistry Inheritance. Eight artists from Tianjin displayed their masterpieces. They included the artwork from Prof. Zheng Yong's Studio’s lacquerware; Three unique intangible cultural heritages of Tianjin (Clay Figurines Zhang, Kite Wei, and Yucheng Hao New Year Paintings); Hezhen Homemade Incense; painted pottery from the Guanzhao Xuan; Zhao’s Gourd-making; and Tianjin Musical Instrument Zhang. These masterpieces showcase the exquisite beauty and value of Chinese culture. During the exhibition period, a number of guided tours were held and over 2000 visitors, including PolyU staff, teachers, students and the public, came to visit the exhibition. A number of media from mainland China and Hong Kong were also attracted to the exhibition for interviews. PolyU Delegation visits Nanjing

Led by Dr Tai Fai Lam, Chairman of the PolyU Council, and Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, President of PolyU, a delegation from PolyU recently visited Nanjing, engaging in fruitful cooperation and exchanges with local universities and the Mayor of Nanjing. During the visit to Nanjing University, in the presence of leaders from both universities, Prof. Li Ping, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at PolyU, and Prof. Zhang Sheng, Dean of the School of History at Nanjing University, signed a strategic cooperation memorandum. This memorandum lays the foundation for further collaboration between the two institutions, including faculty visits, student and academic exchanges. The PolyU delegation also visited Southeast University, where President Teng and Prof. Huang Ru, President of Southeast University, renewed the cooperation agreement between the two universities, reaffirming their commitment to enhancing collaboration. In addition, the delegation also had meetings with Mayor Chen Zhi-chang and Vice Mayor Wu Wei of Nanjing, strengthening the ties between PolyU and Nanjing. By leveraging PolyU’s research strengths and the industry needs of Nanjing, the partnership aims to contribute to the development of both regions. PolyU, Tsinghua University and the University of Macau organise tripartite exchange programme to promote Chinese culture

The Research Centre for Chinese History and Culture of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), established on 17 January this year, successfully held its inaugural event from 26 to 30 June. The Research Centre jointly organised an academic and cultural exchange programme with Tsinghua University and the University of Macau, enabling students from Beijing, Hong Kong and Macau to engage in Chinese historical and cultural exchange. The exchange programme provided an important platform for students to explore modern Chinese history, new perspectives on traditional Chinese culture, and deepen professional learning in the context of national development. PolyU was honoured to receive strong support from Tsinghua University’s Rixin College and Faculty of Humanities, and the University of Macau’s Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Approximately 70 teachers and students from the three universities gathered in Hong Kong to participate in the five-day exchange programme. In addition to lectures, participating students were tasked with writing a 3,000- to 5,000-word paper on one of three topics: 1) Modern China and the World; 2) Modern China: Thought, Culture and History; or 3) New Interpretations of Traditional China. Students then presented their papers for discussion with instructors and peers. The Research Centre arranged excursions for teachers and students to cultural sites including the Sheung Wan Heritage Trail, West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong Palace Museum, Tai Kwun and The Peak. These visits provided first-hand experience of Hong Kong’s modern historical and cultural developments.

Opening Ceremony of the Research Centre for Chinese History and Culture

PolyU held the Opening Ceremony of the Research Centre for Chinese History and Culture on 17 January 2023 and signed a memorandum of understanding with the Institute of Humanities of Tsinghua University. The Opening Ceremony was officiated by Mr Kevin Yeung Yun-hung, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, and Mr Zhang Guoyi, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Publicity, Cultural and Sports Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. They were joined by Dr Lam Tai-fai, Council Chairman of PolyU, Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, President, Prof. Wing-tak Wong, Deputy President and Provost and Prof. Li Ping, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities. The Research Centre aspires to become an influential academic institution in humanities, endeavours to support the Hong Kong SAR Government’s efforts in promoting Chinese culture. Read more
