China Southern Power Grid Visits PolyU’s EEE Department and RCGM to Explore Collaborative Opportunities

On September 10, 2024, a delegation from China Southern Power Grid visited both the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) and the Research Centre for Grid Modernisation (RCGM) at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The visit aimed to explore avenues for collaboration in talent development and research. Professor Chi-Yung Chung, Director of RCGM and Head of the EEE Department, welcomed the delegation, highlighting the department’s and the centre’s commitment to fostering innovative solutions through industry partnerships. Associate Directors of RCGM, Professors Siqi Bu and Qin Wang, provided an overview of key research projects and discussed potential collaborative programs, including student and faculty exchanges, as well as joint research initiatives. The China Southern Power Grid delegation, led by Vice President Xiaochen Wu, expressed a strong interest in establishing deeper ties with both RCGM and the EEE Department. Their discussions centered on cooperative efforts in areas such as renewable energy integration, advanced power electronics and energy storage systems, and the modernization of the electrical grid. The meeting also gave China Southern Power Grid representatives an opportunity to interact with students and researchers from both RCGM and EEE, further strengthening the foundation for future collaboration. RCGM and EEE Host Delegation from Xi’an Jiaotong University to Strengthen Collaborative Ties

On September 4, 2024, the Research Centre for Grid Modernisation (RCGM) and the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) at Hong Kong Polytechnic University hosted a delegation from the School of Electrical Engineering at Xi’an Jiaotong University. The purpose of the visit was to discuss potential collaborations in talent exchange and joint research, focusing on areas like innovative technologies for future grid modernisation. The delegation from Xi’an Jiaotong University was led by Professor Deliang Liang, and included other key faculty members. They were welcomed by Professor Chi-Yung Chung, Director of RCGM and Head of the EEE Department, alongside Associate Directors Professors Siqi Bu and Qin Wang. The discussions centered around creating pathways for student exchanges at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as identifying areas for potential research collaboration between the two institutions. Professor Liang highlighted Xi’an Jiaotong University’s ongoing efforts in grid modernization and expressed strong interest in partnering with RCGM and EEE to leverage each institution’s strengths in energy systems and engineering education. The meeting underscored a mutual commitment to advancing research on critical technologies and furthering innovation in future power systems. RCGM Director Prof. Chung Shares Vision on Energy Systems at the 9th Zijin Forum and Engineering Technology Seminar in Nanjing

From August 17 to 18, 2024, the Chinese Academy of Engineering’s Engineering Science and Technology Academic Seminar and the 9th Zijin Forum on Electrical Engineering were held in Nanjing. This significant event was organized by the Chinese Academy of Engineering’s Division of Energy and Mining Engineering and the State Grid Electric Power Research Institute (SGEPRI) and hosted by the National Key Laboratory of Power Grid Operation Risk Defense Technology and Equipment. The conference brought together 60 distinguished scholars from China, the UK, and Canada to discuss the theme of “New Energy Systems Supported by Advanced Power Systems.” The focus was on sharing the latest research findings, evaluating new technologies, models, and business trends in the energy and power sectors, and supporting the development of a clean, low-carbon, secure, and efficient power system.Of particular note, Prof. Chung Chi-yung from the Canadian Academy of Engineering participated in the conference and delivered a keynote speech. His presentation was a highlight of the event, offering a deep dive into the advancements in smart grid technology and its implications for global energy systems. Prof. Chung’s speech provided valuable insights into the integration of artificial intelligence and digital twins in optimizing power grid operations and enhancing energy efficiency. His contribution significantly enriched the discussions and was met with high acclaim from the attendees.Prof. Chung’s involvement underscored the international collaboration and exchange of ideas that the conference aimed to foster. His expert perspectives on the latest developments in power system technologies and their future potential were instrumental in broadening the scope of the seminar and enhancing its global relevance. The session featuring Prof. Chung was particularly impactful, drawing attention from both the academic community and industry professionals present at the forum.

RCGM Delegation Conducts Productive Exchange with Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau

On July 16, 2024, a delegation from the Research Centre for Grid Modernisation (RCGM) conducted a successful technical exchange with the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau. The visit focused on sharing insights into Shenzhen's advancements in virtual power plants, smart microgrids, and digital grid technologies. This exchange marked a significant step in strengthening collaboration on innovative power system solutions. Led by Professor Chi-Yung Chung, Director of RCGM, the delegation explored Shenzhen’s pioneering efforts in distributed energy integration, smart grid management, and user interaction. Professor Chung emphasized that Shenzhen’s experience in these areas will provide crucial guidance for RCGM’s ongoing research and development initiatives. Joining the discussions were Associate Directors Professor Qin Wang and Professor Siqi Bu, who shared their insights on virtual power plants and smart microgrid systems, opening the door to potential collaborative projects. In addition to the leadership team, other RCGM researchers engaged in detailed discussions around energy storage solutions, load management, and the integration of distributed systems with the main grid. This exchange not only deepened the understanding of cutting-edge technologies but also laid a strong foundation for future cooperation between RCGM and the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau. The exchange underscores RCGM's commitment to advancing power grid modernization through international collaboration. PolyU Established the Grid Modernization Research Center to Promote Emerging Power Systems Technology Innovation

Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) officially launched the Research Centre for Grid Modernisation at a ceremony held on campus, attracting leaders from 35 government departments, public institutions, research centres, professional bodies, industry associations, and large enterprises across Hong Kong, Macau, and Mainland China. These leaders represented sectors such as power and energy, energy management, microelectronics, telecommunications, electrical engineering, and rail transport. Additionally, academic leaders and experts from 26 universities across Hong Kong, Macau, and Mainland China participated in the event. The ceremony was officiated by Mr. Tse Chin Wan, Secretary for Environment and Ecology of the Hong Kong SAR Government; Dr. Hao Yingjie, Secretary-General of the China Electricity Council; Mr. Qian Zhaoyang, General Manager of China Southern Power Grid Company; Prof. Teng Jinguang, President of PolyU; Prof. Zhao Ruheng, PolyU’s Vice President for Research and Innovation and Director of the Centre for Research and Innovation in Science and Policy; Ir Alfred Sit Wing-hang, Honorary Director of the Research Centre for Grid Modernisation and former Secretary for Innovation and Technology of the Hong Kong SAR Government; and Prof. Chung Chi Yung, Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at PolyU and Director of the Research Centre for Grid Modernisation. Together, they witnessed the establishment of the Research Centre. The launch of the Research Centre for Grid Modernisation at Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) attracted widespread media attention, with over 50 media outlets reporting on the event. Major news platforms from Hong Kong, Mainland China, and overseas, including People’s Daily, CCTV, South China Morning Post, The Standard, and China News Service, covered the launch. These media outlets emphasized the significance of the centre in promoting innovation and modernization in grid technology.  With the strong backing of various stakeholders, the PolyU Research Centre for Grid Modernisation is set to play a pivotal role in addressing the challenges faced by the energy and power sectors, while its establishment was celebrated as a significant step toward fostering cross-border cooperation in clean energy technologies.
