Biography

Professor Xiaoxin Zhou, born in April 1940 in Penglai, Shandong Province, is a distinguished expert in power systems. He is a professor-level senior engineer, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a foreign member of the National Academy of Engineering (USA), and a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He also serves as the Honorary President of the China Electric Power Research Institute and is a doctoral advisor.

Professor Zhou graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tsinghua University in 1965. From July 1979 to July 1980, he furthered his studies at the Hydro-Québec Research Institute (IREQ) in Canada. Upon returning to China, he held several key positions at the Electric Power Research Institute, including Engineer, Deputy Director, Director of the System Research Institute, and Chief Engineer of the Institute. In 1993, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, became an IEEE Fellow in 1995, and was elected as a foreign member of the National Academy of Engineering in 2021.

Throughout his career, Professor Zhou has focused on the mathematical modeling and analytical methods for power system analysis. Since the 1970s, he has led the development of China's first comprehensive software for power system analysis, which has been widely adopted across the country's power systems. In the 1990s, Professor Zhou began researching flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) and led major projects such as the controllable series compensation for UHV transmission systems. His work has significantly advanced the application of power electronics and modern control theory in power systems to meet future development needs. He has participated in or led key technological research for several major ultra-high voltage (UHV) transmission system projects in China. His contributions include proposing and implementing new simulation models, analytical methods, and key technologies for projects such as China's first 330 kV UHV transmission line and the first ±500 kV HVDC transmission line.

According to the March 2022 issue of "Electrical Technology" magazine, Professor Zhou has published over 160 academic papers and authored seven scientific and technical books. By January 2020, he had published more than 110 papers indexed by EI and SCI.

Professor Zhou has been responsible for several significant research projects, including a sub-project of the National Key Basic Research Program (973) focusing on the key technologies of real-time simulation systems for multi-machine power systems supported by high-speed PC networks in the late 1990s. From 2004 to 2009, he served as the chief scientist for the 973 project on improving the operational reliability of large interconnected power grids.

His contributions have been widely recognized, earning him numerous awards, including one National Science Conference Award, three National Science and Technology Progress First Prizes, and one National Excellent Scientific and Technological Book First Prize. By January 2020, he had been granted over 20 invention patents. Professor Zhou is considered a pioneer in the field of modern power system analysis and computation in China.
