Gammon Lab Tour

A group of 10 members from Gammon visited RCRE laboratory on 17 August 2022 (Wed). After the lab tour, Prof. C.S. Poon also gave a brief presentation about RCRE, introducing our background, vision and research directions.

The PolyU InnoTech Open Day 2022

The PolyU InnoTech Open Day was successfully held on 16 July 2022 on campus to showcase the University’s latest endeavours in education, interdisciplinary research, knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship which are helping to empower the innovation and technology (I&T) development of Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and beyond.   RCRE set up a booth at Main Hall of Shaw Sports Complex to showcase the funded project of RCRE members and their recent researches. In the afternoon's breakout session, Prof. Poon delivered a talk with the topic of "Carbon Netural Construction Materials".   At the same time, RCRE also participated in a lab tour held by FCE with the theme low carbon construction materials and energy efficiency in building construction.

Lab Visit Programme for PolyU Court Members

The University Court Members had a lab visit programme on 1 June 2022. They visited the University’s carbon neutrality-related research facilities ‒ Concrete Materials Laboratory with the theme low carbon construction materials and energy efficiency in building construction.   During the lab visit programme, Prof. Poon and his PhD students introduced the Low carbon architectural products for anti-virus (anti-COVID19), the foam glass-based lightweight concrete for low carbon MiC, the sustainable Permeable Concrete for Urban Drainage and the process of turning concrete waste into low carbon products by carbonation.   There were around 15 court members joining the visit with Dean chaperoning along the visit.

International Webinar on Valorization of Waste Incineration Residues in Construction

The International Webinar on Valorization of Waste Incineration Residues in Construction (co-organized by RCRE and ISCOWA) was held on 29 - 30 March 2022 via Zoom. This Webinar aims to disseminate the latest state-of-the-art practice and research studies on valorization of waste incineration residues for use in construction. Renowned professionals and academics in the management of incineration residues area were invited to deliver lectures. There are 13 presentations provided by world-wide speakers. It attracted more than 150 registrations and more than 100 participants joined the webinar online.

Inauguration of the Research Centre for Resources Engineering towards Carbon Neutrality

The RCRE Inauguration Ceremony was held on 14 January 2022 on the PolyU campus. Over 100 guests from the Hong Kong Government, PolyU, the industry and the Centre’s research partners attended physically or online and witnessed this new page. “Our campus is working hard on achieving the goal of carbon neutrality before 2050. RCRE fits very well into this arena and its research work will add great value to helping not only PolyU but the whole community to achieve this target that can benefit our society in a meaningful way,” said PolyU’s Vice President (Research and Innovation) Professor Christopher Chao at the inauguration ceremony. Speaking at the same occasion, Professor Jin-Guang Teng, President of PolyU, stated that PolyU now has the largest research team and facilities among all the universities in Hong Kong focusing on resources engineering towards carbon neutrality, and has established a strong track record and recognised reputation in the waste management research community. PolyU will advance further with the establishment of RCRE for the good of the society. Attending the ceremony online, Mr Wong Kam-sing, Secretary for the Environment, commended PolyU for its contribution and efforts to pool its interdisciplinary talents and facilities to advance the development of decarbonisation technologies and related policy study. The ceremony also featured a fruitful scientific exchange by different PolyU and overseas researchers who presented on a kaleidoscope of topics. Poster presentations on current projects conducted by PolyU researchers were also staged and attracted the attention of all the attending guests at the spot.

Carbon Neutrality Gambit: Field Trip & Innovation Challenge 2022

RCRE organized a three-day student event called “Carbon Neutrality Gambit”. The event focus on the group competition and idea generation towards the carbon-neutral future. Winner will get internship opportunities with leading professors in RCRE.
