Changing Lives through Service-Learning in Rwanda
This summer, a group of PolyU students and staff members has landed in Rwanda to join the two-week service-learning and leadership programme “Wong Tit Shing Sustainability Education Project: Habitat Green in East Africa”. Led by PolyU’s Service-Learning and Leadership Office, together with PolyU Council Chairman Dr Lam Tai-fai, President Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, and Vice President (Student and Global Affairs) Prof. Ben Young, who are joining the trip for the first time, PolyU students and staff are embarking on a life-changing journey of social impact.
PolyU students taking service-learning subjects offered by the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the Department of Computing are going to put theory into practice by installing over 400 solar power generation systems in rural Rwanda. They will bring electricity to impoverished families across the mountainous villages.
Additionally, students taking service-learning subject offered by the School of Fashion and Textiles are going to transfer knowledge and skillsets on textile arts to the local community, enabling locals to upcycle fabrics into sustainable fashion items.
