Collaborative Research Seminar and Workshop: Biotechnology as an Economic Driver for Hong Kong
On September 18, 2013, the ITDO organized its first collaborative research seminar and workshop, “Biotechnology as an Economic Driver for Hong Kong”, at the PolyU Lim Por Yen Lecture Theatre 1. Hosted by PolyU Vice President (Research Development) Professor Ping-kong Alexander Wai, the event was attended by over 70 attendees from the industry and academia. Dr. Johnson Yiu-Nam Lau, MBBS, MD, FRCP, a successful pharmaceutical executive who has had extensive leadership experience in both scientific and business management, was invited to be the Guest Speaker of the event; with moderation by Dr. Manson Fok, MBBS, FRCS, a renowned doctor and entrepreneur, the seminar brought to the audience extremely valuable insights on Hong Kong’s biotechnology development. After the seminar, a whole-day private workshop was also organized for PolyU professors to share with Dr. Lau, Dr. Fok, and two other special guests Dr. Qui Lim Choo (co-discoverer of the Hepatitis C virus) and Dr. Benjamin Lee (Managing Director at Comprehensive Drug Enterprises Ltd). The seminar and workshop marked the beginning of a series of collaborative research and technology development initiatives undertaken by the ITDO at PolyU, with the goal of promoting knowledge transfer by materializing more extensive collaborations with the industry, universities, government, and other local and international institutions across different technology sectors.
