Keynote Speaker

Sophie Durrans

Deputy Director, UK Research and Innovation, China, British Embassy Beijing

Sophie holds an MSc Global Health and Development from University College London, with a focus on behaviour change and infant nutrition. She completed an MA (Hons) in Archaeology and Anthropology from the University of Cambridge, specialising in Social Anthropology. For her dissertation, she undertook ethnographic research on ‘fantasy coffins’ and funeral customs in Greater Accra, Ghana. Sophia specialises in international research partnerships and particularly enjoy building collaborations to solve global challenges. She has a background in global public health, research uptake, policy, and funding - all of which require strong partnership development and programme management skills. Her work has taken her across sub-Saharan Africa and East Asia, where she has worked for funders, implementers, and government institutions. Currently, Sophia works for UKRI, overseeing the UK’s research and innovation collaborations with China. She is based in Beijing and takes the lead in developing relationships with China’s national and regional stakeholders to facilitate joint UK-China research and innovation programmes.
