Developed by AiDLab, AiDA empowers fashion designers, based on their creative inspirations, to work with AI for creating original designs speedily.
Artificial Intelligence-based Interactive Design Assistant for Fashion (AiDA) is the first-in-market technology developed by the Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence in Design (AiDLab) that empowers fashion designers, based on their creative inspirations, to work with AI for creating original designs speedily. AiDA addresses the practitioner’s needs during the ideation and development process through a specific combination of advanced AI technologies. It helps to bring ideas into the market faster and accelerate the digital transformation facing the 4th industrial revolution.
The market-first system realises speedy ideation by generating unique creations based on the designer’s original inspirations and personal style. Employing various advanced AI techniques, including machine learning, relation-aware transformer network, etc., and a fine-grained colour extraction technique which can accurately distinguish over 2,300 colours, AiDA can recognise a designer’s inspiration through the images of each designer’s mood board, colour choices, fabric prints and sketches to create new fashion collections in approx. 10 seconds, shorten the development time of collection as a whole. It is user friendly and intuitive, wisely designed for both novices and experienced designers to spark inspiration. In addition to the new designs generated according to designers’ mood boards and preferences, the system can generate more innovative designs for human creators for consideration and collaboration. With just a few simple clicks, designers can select personal options from the generated collection, to further refine or include within their collections, enhancing conventional, intensive studio processes with agility, efficiency and flexibility.
Unlike current mainstreamed AI technologies on new image generation, which rely solely on the digital input of existing real fashion images to output new designs, and often produce designs which are unsuitable for following manufacturing processes or of low quality, the intelligent system realises speedy ideation by generating unique creations based on the designer’s original inspirations and personal style. Designers can be actively involved in the ideation process and follow their real-life fashion design process that starts with drafted design sketches or mood boards.
Rigorous trial use studies conducted with regional and international fashion practitioners have been completed with satisfaction and the upgraded version of AiDA will be released to the industry in 2022. Identifying its huge potential for future development, additional functions will be explored, for example, the capability to apply the print to certain parts of clothing; or transforming the clothing drafts from 2D to 3D for virtual model display, embracing and gasping opportunities brought by Industry 4.0.
