RISports showcased at PolyU's 30th Anniversary Gala Dinner

The PolyU's 30th Anniversary Gala Dinner held on 2 Dec 2024 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre brought together over 800 distinguished guests, including alumni, benefactors and supporters. An interactive exhibition was staged at the venue, showcasing how RISports conduct holistic foot assessments for prescribing appropriate shoes and insoles to cater individual needs.

Delegation from Shanghai Administration of Sports visited RISports

Dr Xiangchen Li, Director of Smart Sports Innovation Research Center of China Institute of Sport Science (CISS), Ms Yuqin Hu from the Graduate Department of CISS, along with Prof. Lei Shi and Prof. Yannis Pitsiladis from Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), led a delegation to visit RISports last month. Prof. Ming Zhang and his team introduced the latest development of the institute and the ongoing research projects.

RISports hosts 2024 Symposium on Sports Science and Technology to promote talent cultivation and industry development

The Research Institute for Sports Science and Technology (RISports) and the Department of Biomedical Engineering joined hands with the Samaranch Foundation and AquaBloom International Sports Technology Group to co-organise the 2024 Symposium on Sports Science and Technology, from Nov 30 to Dec 2, attracting more than 200 students, researchers and industry professionals. On the first day of the Symposium, a forum featured 6 former Olympic or world champion athletes from the HK, China team, and national teams shared the applications of sports technology, and their development after retirement. In the following two days, scholars and industry experts shared the latest research outcomes and products in Sports Science and Technology. They discussed how to integrate innovative technologies such as Sports Biomechanics, Intelligent Wearable Systems and AI to enhance training effectiveness. Additionally, representatives from the national swimming team shared insights into the training systems, while former Olympic champions introduced their doctoral research work. Prof. Zhang Ming, Director of RISports, also announced the establishment of the International Society of Sports Science and Technology, aimed at promoting international exchange and cooperation. PolyU will launch a new programme "MSc in Sports Technology and Management" in the coming year, injecting fresh energy into the sports sectors.

RISports showcased at the InnoTech Open Day × Alumni Homecoming 2024

The University’s flagship event InnoTech Open Day × Alumni Homecoming 2024 was successfully held on Saturday, attended by over 7,800 alumni and friends. RISports showcased the portable and markerless motion capture technologies and an instrumented treadmill used to measure the dynamic body movements and loads during running. Besides, the 3D foot scan system measured the 3D foot shape and collected foot parameters. Together with the gait analysis, holistic foot assessments can be done for prescribing appropriate shoes and insoles to cater individual needs. Our Director, Prof. Zhang Ming, has also shared the latest projects and development of RISpots at the PAIR InnoTech Forum.

RISports helped HK karate team with performance analysis (English only)

Dr Annie Wang, member of RISports and Research Assistant Professor of Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), led a research team to install a new multicamera system at the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) karate studio. The system can do markerless motion capture and performance analysis for karate athletes. It is welcomed by Mr Mohamed Elhosieny Aly, Technical Commission Chairman of World Karate Federation and Chairman of Asian Karate Federation Technical Commission, Mr William Thomas, Head Karatedo Coach of HKSI, and karate referee of Asian countries. They also made suggestions on system optimization and would like encourage other karate organizations to use it.
