RGC Collaborative Research Fund Scheme 2015/16

A proposal led by Dr Hai GUO of Regional Air Quality Research Group for a thermal desorption aerosol gas chromatograph and time of flight aerosol mass spectrometer has recently been approved for funding of HK$4,258,296 from the RGC Collaborative Research Fund. The funding will be used for the purchase of equipment which will significantly enhance the research capabilities of local universities with cutting-edge scientific studies on atmospheric processes, with applications for environmental sustainability, human health, and for enhancing the efficiency of industrial and energy generation processes. It is expected that as knowledge on size-related aerosol chemical transformation and composition accumulates, future standards and regulations in this area will be formulated to protect humans and the environment. It will also facilitate the long-term development of the city.

4th GIGCAS-HKPOLYU Joint Workshop on Environmental Science and Engineering

Co-organized by the Research Institute for Sustainable Urban Development (RISUD) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic and the University Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, a division of the Chinese Academy of Science (GIG-CAS), the 4th GIGCAS-HKPOLYU Joint Workshop on Environmental Science and Engineering was held on 19 December 2015 at PolyU Shenzhen Research Institute. The one day annual workshop aimed to provide a key platform for more extensive collaboration on research, education and training in environmental science and engineering between the two institutions. The workshop has brought together about 90 scholars and research students from both institutions which consisted of 19 oral presentations in four sessions, and 41 poster presentations. To encourage active participation of young researchers, a majority of oral presentations are from our PhD students and post-doctoral fellows. Similar to last year, about 20% excellent oral and poster presentations were selected by a referee committee consisting of professors from both sides. Outstanding were rewarded with certificates issued by GIG-CAS and PolyU.
