Summary

Amputations and the need for personalized prosthetic care continue to rise, particularly due to on-going war victims and also aging populations. Beyond physical functionality, amputees face evolving challenges related to emotional needs, lifestyle adaptations, and sustainable healthcare. At the University of Malta, we have ongoing research on an AI-based Prosthesis Development Service Framework to address amputees' dynamic needs, integrating data-driven insights for adaptable and individualized aftercare. Leveraging participatory design, the framework promotes collaboration between healthcare providers, designers, and end-users to create modular prosthetic solutions tailored to users' evolving requirements. Our approach utilizes a product-service system (PSS) approach to enhance prosthetic devices, supporting mobility and quality of life while incorporating resource-efficient design. Using smart sensors and a "digital twin" concept, the framework responds to unique challenges faced by amputees, with applications suitable for both young and elderly amputees. The PREMIER prosthesis prototype for above-knee amputees, demonstrates how AI-driven insights facilitate tailored healthcare support for the evolving needs of amputees.

Professor and Head of the Department of Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering, University of Malta

Jonathan C. Borg graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Malta in 1989. After working with the Maltese Water Authority, managing CAED systems and contributing to a computational model of the water aquifer, in 1992, he joined the University to lecture and perform research in product development. He holds an MSc in CAED (1993) and a PhD in intelligent concurrent product design (1999), both from the University of Strathclyde (UK). He served as Head of the Department of Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering for 12 years, established the MSc in Integrated Product Development (IPD) and co-founded the International PhD Summer School on IPD in 2014. Since 2019, he has chaired the Faculty's Industrial Advisory Board. Borg has been an EC appointed expert evaluator since 2002 and twice chaired the European Research Council's evaluation panel for Products & Processes. Recognized internationally, he was awarded a Medal of Appreciation by the UK Institution of Engineering Designers and has been made an Honorary Professor at the University of Miskolc. He leads the Concurrent Engineering Research Unit and has over 140 scientific publications.
