ACHIEVEMENTS AND RECOGNITION
The SHTM continues to remain in the upper echelons of international rankings and recognised the world over for its outstanding reputation and commitment to global excellence in hospitality and tourism education and research.
  • No. 1 in the world in ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2024 for 8 consecutive years
  • No. 1 in the world in University Ranking by Academic Performance 2023/24 for 7 years in a row
  • No. 1 in the world in CWUR Rankings 2017
  • No. 1 in Asia in QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025 and No. 2 in the world among university-based programmes for the 9th consecutive year
Prof Cathy Hsu received the Founder's Award at the 30th Annual Graduate Education and Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism held in Houston, USA on 2-4 January 2025. The award recognises a world-class scholar each year in the field of hospitality and tourism for his/her significant contributions in research, scholarship, and the development of graduate programmes/students.
Prof Haiyan Song and Mr Noor Ahmad Hamid, CEO of the Pacific Asia Travel Association, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 15 January 2025, to extend its partnership with the SHTM for an additional three years (2024–2027) to continue the publication of the Asia Pacific Visitor Forecasts reports. The reports provide tourism professionals, businesses, and destinations with essential insights for policymaking, strategic planning, and operational management, enabling them to navigate evolving demand patterns and make informed decisions when facing current and future global challenges.
Five MSc students in the International Wine Management programme, including Mr James Kwan, Mr Damon Liu, Ms Celine Ma, Ms Nina Ni and Ms Cindy Yu, received the First Place and Grand Prize Winner of the Byron Marlow Award at the 2024 Intercollegiate Wine Business Invitational (IWBI) wine business plan development competition, hosted by Wine Business Education.
Eleven SHTM faculty and staff members, namely Prof Haiyan Song, Prof Catherine Cheung, Prof Kam Hung, Prof Ada Lo, Prof Vincent Tung, Prof Maxime Wang, Prof YooHee Hwang, Mr Katsuto Sandifer, Ms Anita Chan, Mr Willie Chan and Ms Ada Au, were honoured by PolyU with Long Service Awards in recognition of their many years of loyal and dedicated service to the institution.
Prof Catherine Cheung and Mr Raymond Liu, General Manager, Metropark Hotel Kowloon & Metropark Hotel Hung Hom, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on an CTG Hotels & Resorts internship collaboration in Shenzhen, China on 10 March 2025.
Dean Kaye Chon and Prof Xia Xie, Dean of the School of Tourism, Xinjiang University, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on tourism research and education collaboration in Xinjiang, China on 14 March 2025.
Miss Yuki Chen, Miss Harmony Cheung, Miss Dora Chow, Miss Carrie Yeung and Miss Bobo Yip, Year 2 students in the BSc (Hons) in Hotel Management programme, signed up to become the latest group of Elite Management Trainees at Hotel ICON on 19 March 2025. As the brightest and most promising SHTM students, they will undergo intensive training for 11 months to gain the skills and experience needed to work as supervisors or managers upon graduation.
Three undergraduate students representing The Bacchus: SHTM Wine Society, Mr Timothy Huh, a Year 3 student in the Hotel and Tourism Management (Smart Tourism and Hospitality) programme and a dual degree student from Kyung Hee University; and Mr Lucas Cheung and Mr Sam Chen, Year 1 students in the BSc Scheme in Hotel and Tourism Management programme, were awarded 3rd place in the Left Bank Bordeaux Cup (Asia Qualification) in Hong Kong on 19 March 2025.
Mr Nigel Lee, a Year 3 student in the BSc (Hons) in Hotel and Tourism Management (Hotel Management) programme, and his teammates from other hospitality schools won the Championship in the YHS Challenge titled "Overtourism: Keeping the Balance" at the Young Hospitality Summit hosted by the EHL Hospitality Business School in Switzerland on 17-19 March 2025.
At the same event, Miss Gillianne Fontanilla, a Year 3 student in the BSc (Hons) in Hotel and Tourism Management (Event & Experience Management) programme, and her teammates from other hospitality schools were awarded 2nd place in the Case Study Challenge – "YHS x Cruse Lorenzetti".
