CONFERENCES/SEMINARS/WORKSHOPS
SHTM staff members, including Dean Kaye Chon, Prof Cathy Hsu, Prof Dan Wang, Prof Maxime Wang, Prof Wangoo Lee, Prof Anyu Liu, and Prof Hailey Shin, together with Ph.D. students Ms Darry Dai, Ms Molly Pang, Ms Hongrun Wu, Ms Eileen Yan, Ms Cyan Zheng, and D.HTM students Mr Paolo Zhang and Ms Miki Zhang, attended the 30th Annual Graduate Education and Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism in Houston, USA on 2-4 January 2025.
  • Dean Chon and Prof Dan Wang participated in the panel discussion on "30 Years of Graduate Conference: Reflections".
  • Prof Hsu participated in the panel discussion on "Navigating the Complexities of Doing Impactful Research".
  • Prof Lee presented a co-authored paper entitled "Fame over Fear: Understanding the Optimism Bias in Celebrity-Driven Tourist Behaviour".
  • Prof Liu presented two co-authored papers entitled "Sensemaking in the Relationship Between Authentic Leadership and Employee Well-Being: The Role of Work Meaningfulness and Group Empathy" and "Government-Facilitated Strategic Alliances in Rural Tourism: Leadership Models and Their Impact on B&Bs' Development".
  • Prof Shin presented a paper entitled "Big Data Analytics in R".
  • Ms Dai and Prof Dan Wang presented a co-authored paper entitled "Triggering Travel Inspiration on Social Media: An Investigation of Driving Factors".
  • Ms Pang and Ms Wu presented a co-authored paper entitled "Tourists' Preferences for Pro-Poor Tourism Income Distribution".
  • Ms Wu also presented a co-authored paper entitled "Is It Possible to Combine Stated and Revealed Preferences? --- An Application to Flight Offset Choices".
  • Ms Yan and Prof Maxime Wang presented a co-authored paper entitled "Have You Reached the Bottom-Line? Emotional and Behavioural Responses of Employee and the Role of Mindfulness".
  • Ms Zheng and Prof Dan Wang presented a co-authored paper entitled "Engaging through Storytelling: The Power of Narratives on Hotel Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Communication on Social Media".
  • Mr Zhang and Prof Hsu presented a co-authored paper entitled "Tourist Stereotype Content and Interactions in Cross-Cultural Service Encounters: The Perspective of Service Providers".
  • Ms Zhang presented a co-authored paper entitled "Confucian Values and Servant Leadership in Asian Hospitality".
Mr Joey Wu presented a paper entitled "From Frustration to Innovation: Coping with Free-Riders in Multicultural Hospitality Education" at the 10th IAFOR International Conference on Education in Honolulu, USA on 3-7 January 2025.
Prof Catherine Cheung, Prof Ada Lo, Dr Angie Luo, Dr Ibrahim Mohammed, and 23 postgraduate students visited the Spectrum of the Sea, a luxury cruise ship, on 12 January 2025, to support Luxury Experience learning and to enrich the Luxury Management knowledge of the students.
The SHTM's Food and Wine Academy organised several workshops. These included the following:
  • Ms Anushka Purohit, CEO of Breer Hong Kong and Prof YooHee Hwang, SHTM Assistant Professor shared their insights on upcycled food. Participants were invited to taste the non-alcoholic upcycled beer at a workshop entitled "From Waste To Worth: What is Upcycled Food and Why Should We Try It?" on 23 January 2025.
  • Ms Purohit also talked about how food waste can be transformed into "liquor gold" at the Brew-tiful Workshop on 11 February 2025.
  • Master Juan Ruiz Mendez, Cortador, and Mr Kevin Tam, Meat Category Manager, both of Classic Fine Foods, demonstrated Iberico shoulder ham carving and introduced the heritage of La Prudencia and the passion behind their craft at the Spanish Iberico Ham Workshop on 25 February 2025.
  • Mr Borja Sánchez, Spanish Wine Scholar, Founder & Managing Director, Los Ibericos Ltd, introduced the classifications of Iberico Hams, Corpinnat sparkling wines and pairing of hams and sparkling wines at the Iberico Ham and Bubbles Workshop on 27 February 2025.
  • Chef Clement Bargoin, Pastry Chef & Instructor, Le Cordon Bleu Shanghai, conducted the "Delicatesse Choco Framboise" Demonstration on 3 March 2025.
  • Ms Rita Cheung, CEO of Mystic Island Winery, introduced the history of Shandong wine region, and the characteristics of Cabernet Franc in QiuShan Valley at the workshop "A Toast to QiuShan Valley, Shandong" on 4 March 2025.
  • Mr Ivan Aquino, Asia Pacific & Eastern Europe Sales Director, ARAEX Grands Spanish Fine Wines, spoke about five Spanish wines from five classical Spanish regions at the "Wine Journey through Spain" tasting workshop on 13 March 2025.
  • Chef Song Hyun Jeong, from Lotte Hotel Busan, introduced the kimchi, kimjang culture, benefits of kimchi, and live demo on how to make cabbage kimchi at the workshop "Korean Traditional Fermented Food – Kimchi" on 25 March 2025.
Prof Pearl Lin attended the International Conference on Advancements in Education Research and Development in Barcelona, Spain on 28-29 January 2025.
Prof Lisa Gao and Prof Yitong Yu attended the 35th Annual CAUTHE Conference in Brisbane, Australia on 10-13 February 2025. Prof Gao presented a paper entitled "Effects of AI Ingratiation on GAI Carbon Disclosure Practices" and Prof Yu presented a paper entitled "Perceived Service Robot Support: Scale Development and Validation".
Prof Haiyan Song showcased the latest visitor arrival forecasts for the Asia Pacific region, focusing on the industry's transition from recovery to growth at the PATA webinar "Tourism's Next Chapter: Beyond Recovery to Future-Ready Growth" on 20 February 2025.
Prof Daniel Leung participated in the panel discussion on "Metaverse and XR: State of the Art Workshop" and moderated the session on "Education and Training in the AI and Metaverse Era Interactive Workshop" at the 32nd ENTER eTourism Conference in Wrocław, Poland on 17-21 February 2025.
Dean Kaye Chon delivered a keynote on "Where is the Blue Ocean? – Innovations and Leadership in Tourism and Hospitality" at the First Nepal India China Tourism Expo and Conference in Pokhara, Nepal on 24-26 February 2025.
Dean Chon gave a talk on "Changing Trends: Rethinking Nepal's Tourism" to members of Society of Economic Journalists in Nepal and Nepal Tourism Board on 27 February 2025.
Dean Chon delivered a keynote speech on "Revolutionising the Corporate Travel and MICE Industry Through Hospitality Excellence – Embracing Innovation, Sustainability, and Human-Centric Experiences" and participated in the panel session "Fireside Chat: Unlocking Future of Corporate Travel and MICE – Festivalisation of tradeshows or business events to enhance customer experience" at the Connect Marketplace Hong Kong on 19-21 March 2025.
Ms Regina Wang and 18 MSc students attended the Hong Kong Tourism Overview 2025 in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 20 March.
