Dr Stephanie Pougnet presented a paper entitled "Outcomes of Apprenticeship for Employers: An Actor-System Managerial Framework" at the 2nd International Conference on Social Science and Management in Kyoto, Japan on 7-9 May 2014.
Dr Sylvester Yeung chaired a concurrent session on the topic "Cultural Studies & Economic Impact" and presented a paper entitled "Examining the Need of Ethics Courses in China's Hospitality Industry" at the 5th Asia-Euro Conference 2014 in Tourism, Hospitality and Gastronomy in Selangor, Malaysia on 19-21 May.
Dr Stephanie Pougnet presented a paper entitled "School-Work Alternance to Raise and Keep Future Managers: An Action Research" at the 2nd International Conference on Education and Social Sciences in Beijing, China on 22-24 May 2014.
Dr Mimi Li and Dr George Liu attended the Young Scholar Tourism Research Forum in Guangzhou, China on 24-25 May 2014. Dr Li presented a paper entitled "A Review of Cross-Cultural Tourist Review". Dr Liu presented a paper entitled "Comparing the Ph.D. Systems of SHTM at HK PolyU and SHA at Cornell".
Professor Kaye Chon attended the 2nd UNWTO Knowledge Network Global Forum in Mexico City, Mexico on 28-30 May 2014 and participated in a special session entitled "Panel Discussion with UNWTO Ulysses Prize Laureates - Innovation in Tourism: Bridging Theory and Practice" along with Professor Don Hawkins (2003 Laureate), Professor Jafar Jafari (2005 Laureate) and President of Ulysses Foundation Professor Eduardo Fayos-Sola. Dean Chon was the 2011 Laureate.
Dr Norman Au, and two D.HTM students, Ms Caiwei Ma and Ms Lianping Ren, co-presented a paper entitled "Tourists' Hesitation in Social Media Information Chaos" at the 2014 Pan-Pacific Conference XXXI in Osaka, Japan on 2-5 June.
A number of SHTM staff including Professor Cathy Hsu, Professor Bob McKercher, Dr Catherine Cheung, Dr Basak Denizci Guillet, Dr Ada Lo, Dr Barry Mak, Dr Steve Pan, Dr Henry Tsai, Dr Alan Wong and D.HTM students Ms Grace Chan and Ms Amy Lee attended the 7th World Conference for Graduate Research in Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure and the 3rd Interdisciplinary Tourism Research Conference in Istanbul, Turkey on 3-8 June 2014. Professor Hsu participated in two panels which the titles were "Gender Shift in Tourism Education, Workforce and Research: Unfolding the Ongoing and Emerging Challenges" and "How to Publish in Scholarly Journals: Challenges & Prospects for the Future". Professor McKercher was an invited panel speaker on the topic "Trust but Verify". Dr Denizci Guillet and Ms Chan co-presented a paper entitled "Implementing Revenue Management in Hong Kong Travel Agencies". Dr Mak and Dr Pan co-presented a paper entitled "Destination Social Carrying Capacity: A Mass Communication Approach". Dr Tsai presented a paper entitled "A Structural Equation Model of Electronic Destination Marketing", co-authored with Dr Ivan Wen and Ms Joo Yeon Song from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Dr Karin Weber attended the Integrated Marketing Communication Conference in Cape Town, South Africa on 9-10 June 2014.
Dr Wilco Chan attended the 2014 Guangzhou Electrical Building Technology in Guangzhou, China on 9-12 June.
Professor Cathy Hsu, Professor Hanqin Qiu, Ms Tiffany Cheng and Ms Anne Tang attended the 10th Annual International Conference on Tourism in Athens, Greece on 9-12 June 2014. Professor Hsu participated in a round table discussion on "Global Tourism Trends and National Policies" and also presented a paper entitled "Understanding Generation Y Learners: Implications for Teaching". Professor Qiu presented a paper entitled "Constructing a Composite Leading Index for the Hong Kong Tourism Industry". Ms Cheng and Ms Tang co-presented a paper entitled "Hong Kong Hotel and Tourism Management Students' Perceived Effects of Overseas Placement on their Personal Growth", co-authored with Ms Nicole Wong and SHTM graduate Ms Joys Cheng.
Mr Joey Wu presented a paper entitled "A Comparison of the Top Three Travel Blogs in Hong Kong" at the IJAS International Conference for Academic Discipline 2014 in Barcelona, Spain on 16-19 June 2014.
Dr Sabrina Huang, Ms Ada Fong and Ms Loretta Pang attended the Travel and Tourism Research Association 45th Annual International Conference in Brugge, Belgium on 18-20 June 2014. Dr Huang presented a paper entitled "Heritage Tourism and More: Motivation and Alternative". Ms Fong and Ms Pang co-presented a paper entitled "Exploration of a New Merging Tourism Market: Overseas Bridal Photography", co-authored with Mr Xavier Chan.
Dr Karin Weber and Dr Lorenzo Masiero attended the 4th Advances in Hospitality and Tourism Marketing and Management Conference in Mauritius on 25-27 June 2014. Dr Weber presented a paper entitled "Differences in Perceptions and Behavioral Responses between Chinese-American and Mainland Chinese Consumers in a Failure Situation", co-authored with Professor Cathy Hsu and Professor Beverley Sparks. Dr Masiero presented a paper entitled "What are Tourists’ Hotel Room Preferences? A Stated Choice Experiment".
Professor Kaye Chon and Dr Qu Xiao attended the 11th China Hotel Enterprise Development Summit and the 8th International Forum on China Hotel Brand Development in Nanjing, China on 25-27 June 2014. Professor Chon was invited to deliver opening remarks. Dr Xiao moderated the industry leaders round table session "How to Strategically Survive and Succeed in Current Tough Business Environment in China's Hotel Industry?".
Professor Kaye Chon, Dr Jinsoo Lee and Dr Nelson Tsang attended the 2014 World Hospitality and Tourism Forum in Seoul, Korea on 26-28 June 2014. Dr Lee presented a paper entitled "Exploring the Interrelationships between a CVB and its Stakeholders Alongside CVB Performance in the MICE Industry".
Ms Karen Kwan presented a paper entitled "Energy Conservation from an Operational Management Perspective in the Hong Kong Hotel Industry" at the International Research Conference on Engineering and Technology in Bali, Indonesia on 27-29 June 2014.
Professor Haiyan Song presented a paper entitled "Mixed Methods in Tourism Demand Forecasting: The Case of Asia Pacific Visitor Forecasts" at the 34th International Symposium on Forecasting in Rotterdam, The Netherlands on 29 June - 2 July 2014.
Dr Barry Mak, Dr Alice Hon and Ms Clare Fung attended the 4th International Conference on Tourism between China-Spain in Barcelona, Spain on 29 June - 2 July 2014. Dr Mak presented a paper entitled "Destination Choice of the Mainland Chinese Under the 'Individual Visit Scheme'". Dr Hon presented a paper entitled "Investigating a Sleep Management Program: A Case Study in the China Hotel Industry".
Professor Kaye Chon attended the 20th Asia Pacific Tourism Association Annual Conference in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on 1-4 July 2014.
Dr Honggen Xiao chaired a session on "Tourism Issues in Japan and China" at the XVIII International Sociological Association World Congress of Sociology in Yokohama, Japan on 13-19 July 2014.
