SHTM Hosts Dual Forum in Guilin
Following the success of the First Tourism Education and Training Forum held in 2007, the 2nd Forum was held together with the 9th China Tourism Forum on 16-18 October 2014 at the Guilin Institute of Tourism in Guilin, China. Co-hosted and co-organised by the SHTM and the Guilin Institute of Tourism, the dual forum was held immediately following the UNWTO/PATA Tourism Trends and Outlook Forum.
The primary aim of the 2nd Forum was to provide a venue in which tourism
educators, industry practitioners and tourism policy makers could exchange information and discuss emerging issues related to tourism education and training. At the 9th China Tourism Forum, international participants were provided with the opportunity to discuss experiences related to tourism education, training and development in their countries and regions.
The Opening Ceremony was hosted by Professor Yang Jie, President, Guilin Institute of Tourism and officiated at by Professor Kaye
Chon, Dean and Chair Professor of the SHTM; Professor Lin Na, Chairperson, Guilin Institute of Tourism; Ms Eunji Tae, Co-ordinator, UNWTO Knowledge Network; Mr Yu Changguo, Associate Director, Personnel Department, China National Tourism Administration and Assistant Mayor of Guilin; and Mr Jia Yucheng, Associate Director, Tourism Development Committee, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
The following Plenary Session, entitled "Hospitality and Tourism Education: Balancing the Theory and
Practice", featured Professor Dai Bin, President, China Tourism Academy; Dr Fabien Fresnel, Dean of Education and Research, Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne; and Ms Margaret Heng, CEO, Singapore Hotel Association and SHATEC.
Entitled "Tourism Research and Education: Creating an Impact", the second Plenary Session featured Professor Bao Jigang, Dean, School of Tourism Management and Director, Center for Tourism Planning and Research, Sun Yat-sen University; Professor Haiyan Song, Associate Dean and Chair Professor of the SHTM; and Professor Elizabeth Roberts, Head, School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Southern Cross University.
Students from the SHTM, Guilin Institute of Tourism and Guilin University of Technology participated in the third Plenary Session entitled "Dialogue with Students", with Professor Chon leading the discussion on career planning, tourism development issues, the role of social media in industry development, leadership and role models.
The last Plenary Session entitled "Best Practices in Tourism and Hospitality Education" featured Professor David Jones, Professor and Department Chair, Department of Hospitality Management, School of Management, University of San Francisco; Professor Brian King, SHTM Associate Dean; and Dr Joseph Tormey, Director, International School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Fairleigh Dickinson University.
A resounding success, the forum was closed by Professor Kaye
Chon and Professor Yang Jie.
