Professor Brian King was invited to be a member of the jury panel at a cooking competition themed "Low Carbon Dishes" hosted by the Yuen Long Catholic Secondary School on 12 March 2016. To improve pupils' understanding of healthy food and the relationship between parents and children, participants needed to collaborate with their parents in cooking and introduce the low carbon dishes to the jury panel. Nine primary schools joined the competition, with the winning dish, "Gold Roll of Green Power", coming from a student at the W F Joseph Lee Primary School.
Dr Pearl Lin was a culinary judge and served as culinary trainer at the 9th International Abilympics in Bordeaux, France on 25-26 March 2016. The International Abilympics aims at promoting the culinary skills of people with disabilities, and attracted over 600 contestants from 35 countries in 49 categories of competition. The contestant from Taiwan trained by Dr Lin won the Gold Medal in the competition.
Professor Haiyan Song was invited to speak on the topic "Why Tourists Travel to Hong Kong" at the 2016 Hong Kong Tourism Overview - Industry Forum hosted by the Hong Kong Tourism Board at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 31 March.
Dr Stephen Pratt and Dr Denis Tolkach attended the 6th Biennial Conference of the Australian Association for Pacific Studies in Cairns, Australia on 1-3 April 2016. Dr Pratt presented a co-authored paper entitled "Gross Happiness of a 'Tourism' Village in Fiji". Dr Tolkach presented a paper entitled "Tourism Trends in the Pacific Islands".
Dr Murray Mackenzie and MSc students Ms Peng Chen and Ms Qianwen Zhou attended the South African Wine Festival held at Hotel ICON on 11 April 2016. The students shared with participants how the Master of Science in International Wine Management programme has deepened their understanding of the latest trends in the wine business and empowered them to lead the industry's future development.
Professor Kaye Chon and SHTM staff attended the Inauguration Ceremony of the 12th Session of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management Students' Association at Chiang Chen Studio Theatre, PolyU, on 13 April.
Professor Brian King gave a talk on the topic "Integrated Resort Developments in Asia: Leisure and Entertainment" at the Macau University of Science and Technology on 15 April 2016.
An Initiation Ceremony for the PolyU Chapter of Eta Sigma Delta (ESD) took place at the SHTM on 18 April 2016. Led by Miss Queena Cheung, President of the Chapter, 38 SHTM students became ESD members in testimony to their outstanding academic achievements. Mr Louis Shih, Executive Director of Old Stone Hotels Company, addressed the Ceremony and shared with the new ESD members his valuable experience in the hospitality industry.
Professor King attended "A Memorable Graduating Moment at PolyU" on 19 April 2016 as part of an impressive occasion for all non-local final year students, including Mainland Chinese students and international students, before they complete their studies at PolyU.
Dr Karin Weber was an invited facilitator at the IMEX Faculty Engagement Program in Frankfurt, Germany on 20-21 April 2016.
Dr Kam Hung, Dr Steve Pan and Dr Henry Tsai attended the Inaugural International Conference on Tourism and Leisure Studies in Honolulu, USA on 22-23 April 2016. Dr Hung presented a paper entitled "The Roles of Hotels in Chinese Conspicuous Consumption". Dr Pan and Dr Tsai presented a co-authored paper entitled "Developing Ratios to Evaluate Triple Bottom Line for Hotels".
Professor Brian King moderated a panel discussion on "Career Beyond Hong Kong" at the Hospitality Human Resources Forum 2016 organised by Hotel ICON on 25 April 2016.
Professor Kaye Chon delivered an opening speech and keynote speech on "Innovation and Leadership in Hospitality and Tourism" at the 12th Biennial Conference of Hospitality and Tourism Industry in Asia (Asia Tourism Forum 2016) in Bandung, Indonesia on 7-9 May.
Miss Tiffany Cheng and Mr Raymond Kwong presented a co-authored paper entitled "The Missing Links in International Service Learning: A Case Study" at the 4th International Conference on Social Science and Management in Osaka, Japan on 10-12 May 2016.
Professor Kaye Chon and Dr Sam Kim attended the 14th APacCHRIE Conference in Bangkok, Thailand on 11-13 May 2016. Professor Chon spoke on the topic "Where is the Blue Ocean?". Dr Kim presented a co-authored paper entitled "Differences in Willingness to Pay for a Restaurant Menu Price According to Hedonic Variables".
Mr Chanin Donavanik, Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Executive Committee of Dusit International and member of the SHTM Advisory Committee, received the inaugural APacCHRIE Lifetime Achievement Award from the Asia-Pacific Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education on 13 May 2016. The award recognised his outstanding contributions to the hospitality and tourism industry and education in the Asia-Pacific region as well as to APacCHRIE.
Professor Kaye Chon and Dr Stephen Pratt attended the 8th World Conference for Graduate Research in Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure in Bordum, Turkey on 24-29 May 2016. Professor Chon chaired a panel of distinguished scholars. Dr Stephen Pratt delivered a seminar on "12 Important Things I Learnt along the Way of My Ph.D.".
Dr Henry Tsai presented a co-authored paper entitled "Strategic Analyses for Macau as a Gaming Tourism Destination" at the 12th Annual International Conference on Tourism in Athens, Greece on 30 May - 2 June 2016.
