Professor Brian King and Dr Stephen Pratt were keynote speakers at the Islands Tourism Summit 2018 in Okinawa, Japan on 1-2 March 2018. Professor King spoke on "Rethinking the Asian Integrated Resort: Visitors, Operators, Communities and Environments". Dr Pratt spoke on "Tourism in Pacific Island Countries: The State of Play".
Dr Stephen Pratt delivered a presentation on "How to Effectively Manage the Ph.D. Process" and discussed his research at the International Tourism Research Colloquium at Pondicherry University in Pondicherry, India on 21-24 March 2018.
Dr Barry Mak presented a keynote speech entitled "Do Culture Values Matter for Business Development in the Belt and Road Muslim Countries?" at the International Conference on Culture, Business and Technology for Holistic Sustainability in Zhuhai, China on 2-4 April 2018.
Professor Kaye Chon delivered a talk on the topic "Asian Paradigm in Hospitality: Implications for Education and Industry" to the faculty and students of the Adnan Kassar School of Business, Lebanese American University in Lebanon on 5 April 2018.
In celebration of Global Meeting Industry Day on 12 April 2018, Dr Karin Weber's MSc students in the Meeting and Exhibition Management class experienced a digital guest lecture given by Ms Jennifer Kingen Kush, Vice President and Executive Director of the Digital Experience Institute for the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) and Ms Jojo Du, a Digital Event Strategist for the PCMA. The two speakers shared their insights on key considerations for developing an effective digital/hybrid event strategy and illustrated best practice by discussing the PCMA's approach to live streaming their main annual event, Convening Leaders. The students in Hong Kong were connected with Jennifer in New Zealand and Jojo in Chicago via a Zoom meeting that allowed each student to follow the lecture and post questions/comments for greater engagement via their own personal devices.
Professor Kaye Chon, Dr Ksenia Kirillova and Dr Alan Wong attended the 15th KIMEP International Research Conference in Almaty, Kazakhstan on 13-14 April 2018. Professor Chon delivered a keynote speech on "The Silk Road and the Tourism and Hospitality Industries II". Dr Kirillova presented a co-authored paper entitled "Tourism Mobilities through Time: An Empirical Investigation of Mobilities Development in China". Dr Wong presented a co-authored paper entitled "Exploring the Ecotourism Potential of Almaty in Kazakhstan Using a SWOT Analysis Model".
During the trip in Kazakhstan, Professor Kaye Chon also gave a lecture on the "Asian Paradigm in Hospitality" to students at Almaty Management University on 16 April 2018.
The School collaborated with L'Ecole Du Nez to offer a Wine Master Class on 20 April 2018. Our participants were privileged to be guided by Mr Jean Lenoir and neurobiologist Mr Gabriel Lepousez, who shared their wealth of experience and knowledge of sensory analysis in enology with the aim to reawakening the sense of smell in wine tasting.
The Annual Dinner of the HFTP PolyU Student Chapter was held on 20 April 2018. The Chairman of the Hotel Controller & Accountants Association of Hong Kong, Mr Darren Wong, and other committee members attended the important event and shared their insights and experiences with HFTP student members.
Professor Kaye Chon delivered several lectures and seminars during a trip to Korea. He gave a speech entitled "Pursuing Excellence in Hospitality and Tourism Education" at Ewha Womans University on 27 April 2018 and spoke about "Your Career Development for Hospitality and Tourism Industry" at Hanman University and Pai Chai University on 1 and 2 May. He gave a final speech entitled "Innovations in MICE and Tourism Industry" at the Gyeongju Hwabaek International Convention Center on 3 May.
Dr Kam Hung presented a co-authored paper entitled "The Marriage between High-End Fashion Brands and Luxury Hotels: The Comparison between Self-Congruity and Functional Congruity and its Influence on Purchase Intention" at the Mystique of Luxury Brands Conference 2018 in Singapore on 8-9 May.
Professor Haiyan Song, Dr Basak Denizci Guillet and Dr Ksenia Kirillova attended the Greater Bay Area Collaborative Tourism Research Forum in Macau on 8 May 2018. Professor Song participated in a panel session on the topic "Tourism Opportunities and Challenges under the Greater Bay Area Integration".
Dr Kam Hung presented a paper entitled "The Development of a Causality Model for Conspicuous Consumption in Hotels in China" at the LVMH-SMU Luxury Research Conference in Singapore on 10-11 May 2018.
Professor Kaye Chon delivered a keynote entitled "Is There Room for Further Innovations?" at the International Conference on Culinary, Fashion, Beauty and Tourism in Padang, Indonesia on 11-12 May 2018.
Professor Haiyan Song and Ms Eva Li, MSc student in International Wine Management programme, attended the 2nd Wine and Hospitality Management Workshop in Lausanne, Switzerland on 14-15 May 2018. Professor Song presented a co-authored paper entitled "Effects of Terrorist Attacks on Tourist Flows to France: Is Wine Tourism a Substitute?" Ms Li presented a paper entitled "Place-based Branding Strategy for Italian Wine in China: The Case of Tenute Piccini - An Italian Winery" at the student session.
Professor Kaye Chon, Dr Young Choi, Dr Pearl Lin, Dr Janelle Chan and Ph.D. student Ms Vicky Leung attended the 17th Asia Pacific Forum for Graduate Students Research in Tourism in Honolulu, USA on 16-18 May 2018. Professor Chon delivered a keynote speech on the "Vision and Mission of APF". Dr Choi presented a co-authored paper entitled "Examining the Role of Virtual Avatars in Digitalized Hotel Services". Dr Lin and Ms Leung presented a co-authored paper entitled "The Impact of Kitchen Employees' commitment on Job Outcomes". Dr Chan presented a paper entitled "Medium-tariff Hotel Service Quality Evaluation: International Hotel Chain vs Local Boutique Hotels in Hong Kong".
Dr Vincent Tung presented co-authored papers entitled "Investigating Memorable Experiences with Robotics in Hospitality" and "Exploring Opportunities and Challenges of Applying Educational Robotics to Hospitality and Tourism Education" at the 3rd International Conference on Tourism & Leisure Studies in Lanzarote, Spain on 17-18 May 2018.
Dr Basak Denizci Guillet, Dr Alice Hon, Dr Deniz Kucukusta and Ms Clare Fung attended the 27th Council for Hospitality Management Education Annual Research Conference in Bournemouth, UK on 22-25 May 2018. Dr Denizci Guillet and Dr Kucukusta presented a co-authored paper entitled "Is There Such Thing as Feminine Leadership?" Dr Hon and Ms Fung presented a co-authored paper entitled "What Makes Hotel Guests Sleep Well? The Roles of Bed Amenities, Room Cleanliness, and Environment".
Dr Derrick Lee presented a paper entitled "Residents' Perceptions of Grand Ho Tram, Vietnam" at the International Conference on Trends in Tourism Research, Hospitality and Social Sciences in Bangkok, Thailand on 23-24 May 2018.
Dr Norman Au presented a co-authored paper entitled "How does an International Restaurant Chain Handle Social Media Crisis? The Case of KFC Thailand" at the 25th Eurasia Business and Economics Society Conference in Berlin, Germany on 23-25 May 2018.
Professor Kaye Chon delivered a keynote speech entitled "Environmentally Sustainable MICE Tourism" at the Liberal Arts and Management Sciences National and International Conference and Exhibitions 2018 in Surat Thani, Thailand on 23-26 May.
