Following the success of the inaugural "One Belt, One Road, One Tourism" International Conference last year, the second conference took place in Guilin, China on 13-15 October 2019, aiming to not only promote tourism but also foster peace and economic development in the "Belt and Road" countries.
Taking the theme "Development, Marketing and Sustainability", with an emphasis on "Influential Education", the conference provided an interactive
platform for academics and industry executives in the tourism field to share their latest research, analyse industry trends and build connections in relation to the "Belt and Road" initiative, in which tourism is expected to play a significant role.
Co-hosted by the SHTM and Guilin Tourism University (GLTU), the conference was co-organised by the Belt and Road International School at GLTU, the Guangxi Academy of Tourism Professionals and the Editorial Department of Tourism Forum.
Collaborating institutions included the Teaching Management Committee for Tourism Management (Bachelor) in Guangxi, the Guangxi Webster Education Group, the China Integrity Commerce Converging Group Limited, the ASEAN Tourism Research Centre of the China Tourism Academy, the Guangxi Tourism Research Institute, Trisakti School of Tourism (Indonesia), the Guilin Tourism Institute Maritime Silk Road Tourism Economic Research Centre and the Beidou Navigator+Tourism Application Joint Research
Centre.
Officiating the conference opening ceremony at GLTU were Mrs Lin Na, Secretary of the Party Committee of GLTU; Professor Kaye Chon, SHTM Dean, Chair Professor and Walter Kwok Foundation Professor in International Hospitality Management; Mr Jia Yucheng, Director of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Culture and Tourism Department; and Mrs Lu Xin, President of the China Vocational and Technical Education Association and Former Deputy Minister of the Ministry of
Education.
Keynote Session I that followed was moderated by Mrs Fetty Asmaniati, President of the Tourism Institute of Trishakti, Indonesia. Dean Chon delivered a keynote speech entitled "Tourism in Asia: The Way Forward". Dr Tony Tse, SHTM Professor of Practice (Industry Partnerships), then spoke on the topic "Experiential Learning of Hotel Management Major" at Keynote Session II moderated by Dr Azamat A. Akbarov, First Vice President of the Uzbekistan International Tourism University.
Immediately after, Dr Tse moderated a Panel Session entitled "Academic Collaborations along the Belt and Road".
Based on discussions at the conference and consensus among the SHTM, GLTU, Palembang Tourism Polytechnic, Indonesia and the Silk Road International University of Tourism, Uzbekistan, the "One Belt One Road One Tourism Guilin Declaration" was promulgated. The Declaration emphasises the importance of tourism collaboration in the Belt and Road region, with three main areas of
focus: tourism education, the tourism economy and the integration of culture and tourism.
The conference culminated in a closing ceremony at which Dean Chon delivered a closing speech. The ceremony also offered the opportunity to announce that the Third "One Belt, One Road, One Tourism" International Conference would be held at the Silk Road International University of Tourism in Samarkand in 2020.
