Research excellence has long been recognised as one of the School's significant strengths. In the pursuit of excellence, the SHTM established the Hospitality and Tourism Research Centre (HTRC) to bridge the gap between hospitality and tourism theory and industry practice.
The HTRC is a unique research-based platform with an expansive network of hospitality and tourism academics from the School and partner institutions, along with leading industry executives. The Centre supports academic research for the advancement and development of hospitality and tourism knowledge on topics of importance to industry performance. The primary research strengths of the HTRC are Smart Tourism, Performance Measurement and Management, Tourism Futures and
Forecasting, and Policy and Planning.
To foster industry development through the advancement of knowledge, the HTRC has the following five objectives:
- Identify the current trends and practices in the hospitality and tourism industry that are worthy of scientific research.
- Actively conduct cutting-edge, high-impact research with a focus on knowledge creation.
- Collaborate with hospitality and tourism practitioners to translate academic research into best practices
that set benchmarks for the industry.
- Provide policy recommendations for destination governments around the world through evidence-based research.
- Generate high-quality publications and obtain external research funding, focusing on public policy and industry collaborative research funds.
The School has a long history of conducting high-level research, and its researchers have been involved in numerous pioneering projects. Under the auspices of the Greater Bay Area (GBA)
Tourism Research Alliance, of which the HTRC is a collaborator, a series of research activities have been conducted, including the Smart Tourism in the GBA Forum and Youth Challenge, GBA Cross-border Tourism Governance and Synergy Mechanisms, and Blue Book of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area – Report on Tourism Industry of Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area in China (2020). The HTRC led projects cover a range of topics including General-to-Specific Modelling with Bayesian
Bootstrap Aggregation in Tourism Demand, Alleviating Residents' Negative Emotions towards Overtourism in the Greater Bay Area: Policy Implications from the Expressive Writing Approach, and Uncover the Space-Time Dynamics of Tourist Mobility Patterns from Large-Scale Mobile Positioning Data. The Centre has also published high-impact journal papers with diverse foci in the field of hospitality and tourism.
Adhering to the SHTM's motto, 'Leading Hospitality and Tourism', the School spares
no effort in contributing to global hospitality and tourism research. The SHTM is committed to achieving global excellence in hospitality and tourism education, and it continues to forge strong synergies between the industry and academia.
