ACHIEVEMENTS AND RECOGNITION
Professor Mimi Li and Dr Crystal Shi won the Best Paper Award for their paper "Enhancing Student Learning Experience in Wine Tasting: The Role of Virtual Wine Tours as a Pedagogical Approach" at the 42nd ISTTE Annual Conference in Toronto, Canada from 11 to 13 October 2023.
Dean Kaye Chon and Professor Haiyan Song have been appointed to the Research Grants Council (RGC) Business Studies Panel as local members. The RGC is established under the aegis of the University Grants Committee and functions as a semi-autonomous advisory body within the organisational structure of the Committee.
Miss Eve Wang, a final year student in the BSc (Hons) in Hotel Management programme, Miss Shiyi Zhang, an MSc student in the International Wine Management programme, and their teammates from the Beijing Hospitality Institute won 1st Prize in the Future Hoteliers Challenge, held at the Future Hoteliers Summit 2023 in Beijing, China from 25 to 27 October.
The SCMP x SHTM Cocktail Recipe Competition was held on 6 November 2023 to mark the 120th anniversary of the South China Morning Post. Miss Deanna Choi, a Year 3 student in the BSc (Hons) in Hotel Management programme, won the Grand Prize for her cocktail "Oriental Sunrise". Miss Yvie Chen, a Year 3 student in the BSc (Hons) in Tourism & Events Management programme, was Runner-up for her cocktail "Sunup Canvas".
Dr Elton Sun, CEO and Managing Director of Yusu Hotel Management Co. Ltd., a 2004 graduate of the MSc in Hotel and Tourism Management programme, and a 2023 graduate of the Doctor of Hotel and Tourism Management programme, received the PolyU SHTM Outstanding Alumni Award (Professional Achievement) 2023 at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University's 29th Congregation (SHTM), held on 7 November 2023.
Four SHTM graduates received awards at this year's Congregation.
  • Dr Ermias Kifle Gedecho received the Best Ph.D. Thesis Award 2022/23 for his thesis "Investigation of Diaspora Festival Attendees' Perceived Attributes, Experiential Benefits, Values, and Quality of Life: Application to Ethiopian Diaspora Festivals".
  • Dr Wenjun Shan received the Best D.HTM Thesis Award 2022/23 for her thesis "Research on the Impact of Dual Network Embeddedness and Resource Acquisition on Rural Tourism Entrepreneurial Performance".
  • Ms Liting Zhou received the Best MSc Dissertation Award 2022/23 for her thesis "User Perceptions of Airbnb's Online Experiences: An Investigation of Underlying Dimensions Through Corpus-driven Sentiment Analysis".
  • Mr Jason Yuan received the Best Undergraduate Honours Thesis Award 2022/23 for his thesis "European Tourists' Perceptions of Sweden Before and After the Arrival of Refugees from the Middle East".
Miss Caroline Chow, Mr Ho-yin Ng, Miss Xenia Wong and Mr Ben Yick, final year students in the BSc (Hons) in Tourism and Events Management programme, represented the School at the 47th Hong Kong Association of Travel Agents Annual Overseas Convention in Bangkok, Thailand from 10 to 12 November 2023.
Five MSc students in International Wine Management programme including Mr Stéphane Favreau, Mr Issac Ho, Mr Jeff Lee, Ms Elsa Zhang and Ms Tracey Zhu received the Grand Prize at the 2023 Intercollegiate Wine Business Invitational (IWBI) wine business plan development competition hosted by the Wine Business Education.
Dean Kaye Chon and Dr Ekkachai Mahaek, Professor of Practice and Vice President of Chiang Mai University, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 7 December 2023, to foster academic and research collaboration.
SHTM students awarded in the Undergraduate Student Research Competition at the IMPACT2023 Conference on 6-8 December.
  • Under the guidance of Dr Michael Lin, Mr Anthony Liu, a final-year student in the BSc (Hons) in Hotel Management programme, took second place for a co-authored paper entitled "Customer-Based Brand Equity on International Restaurant Chains: A Cross-Cultural and Cross-generational Study".
  • Ms Casey Ho, a final-year student in the BSc (Hons) in Tourism and Events Management programme, under the guidance of Dr Vincent Tung, took second place for a co-authored paper entitled "Enhancing Environmental Conservation in Recreational Sports Tourism: A Shared Responsibility Perspective".
