ACHIEVEMENTS AND RECOGNITION
Ph.D. student Ms Xinying Xu received the Best Conference Paper Award for her co-authored paper entitled "Becoming a Digital Nomad: Exploring the Happiness of Remote Work Tourists" at the 29th Annual Graduate Education and Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism in Miami, Florida, USA on 4-6 January 2024.
Dean Kaye Chon and Professor Namho Chung, Dean and Fellow Professor of College of Hotel and Tourism Management, Kyung Hee University signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 16 January 2024 to foster academic collaboration through study abroad programmes, joint research, conferences and visiting scholars.
Dr Daniel Leung, in collaboration with two scholars from the Macao Institute for Tourism Studies, has won the 2023 JHTM Highly Commended Paper Award by the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Based on two studies conducted in the restaurant context, the paper explored the strategic use of various visual elements in social media marketing to evoke viewers' interest, desire and actions.
Professor Kaye Chon has been appointed a member of the Tourism Strategy Committee (TSC) under the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau, Hong Kong SAR Government. The TSC is a high-level advisory body established by the government to provide strategic advice and foster collaboration amongst stakeholders in tourism and related sectors with the aim of promoting the long-term sustainable development of Hong Kong's tourism industry.
Professor Mimi Li successfully obtained funding for her project, "Nature's Path to Healing: Unleashing the Healing Power of Nature-Based Leisure Activities for Individuals with PTSD in Hong Kong", from PolyU's Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme.
Dr YooHee Hwang obtained support from the Public Policy Research Funding Scheme for her project "Multi-Method Investigations to Increase Public Acceptance of Upcycled Food".
Fourteen SHTM faculty and staff members, namely Prof Honggen Xiao, Dr Norman Au, Dr Alice Hon, Dr Neil Li, Dr Nan Chen, Dr Jinah Park, Dr Clare Fung, Ms Tak Kanchanawat, Dr Raymond Kwong, Mr Jason Chau, Mr Ben Jiang, Ms Gloria Lung, Ms Elly Shek and Mr Noah Tsang, were honoured by PolyU with Long Service Awards in recognition of their many years of loyal and dedicated service to the institution.
Four BSc students received awards in the ICHRIE ESD Undergraduate Research Symposium in Miami, USA on 20-21 February 2024. Miss Kyla Huang and Miss Eve Wang received Best Paper Award for their co-authored paper "Unraveling the Impact of Different Festival Stimuli on Consumers' Intention to Purchase Food and Beverage Products". Mr Russell Tang and Miss Yola Hao received Meritorious Paper Award for their papers "The Impact of Mergers and Acquisitions on Online Travel Agency Stock Prices: A Comprehensive Analysis" and "Importance-Performance Analysis of Green Practices in Hotels: The Customers' Perspective" separately.
The teams led by two final-year students in the BSc(Hons) Tourism and Events Management programme, Miss Mandy Leung and Miss Cindy Pang, received the First and Second Prize, respectively, in the NEOM Challenge at the Young Hospitality Summit on 11-13 March 2024, hosted by the EHL Hospitality Business School in Switzerland and sponsored by NEOM of Saudi Arabia. Miss Leung's team proposed and presented a novel approach to prevent food waste, foster sustainability education and facilitate a circular ecosystem within NEOM, Saudi Arabia. Miss Pang's team presented on the topic "Bridging Concepts, Beyond Realities" with "The Elevate Project". They proposed building an innovative structure with screen and sound technology, as well as transforming footsteps into energy for sustainability that is regenerative and unique to NEOM.
Professor Sam Kim's co-authored article "Perceptions of Attractions, Residents as 'More Knowledgeable Others' and Destination Image: Evidence from Two Destinations", was the Top Downloaded Article from International Journal of Tourism Research in 2022.
