Since 1993, the SHTM Alumni Association (SHTMAA) has sought to forge new links and strengthen existing links between the School and its alumni. In particular, the SHTMAA organises an array of enriching events and activities that serve as exceptional networking opportunities and help former students to remain connected with both their alma mater and their peers.
On 8-11 June 2024, members of the SHTMAA had the opportunity to
participate in an unforgettable tour of the beautiful province of Yunnan, China. This fun-filled and action-packed tour was a perfect blend of hotel and resort visits, industry exchange and networking, cultural immersion, a winery tour, wine and cuisine tasting, and exciting sightseeing.
The tour included enlightening visits to a city hotel, Wanda Vista Kunming, and a themed resort, DongFengYun Hotel Mile-MGallery, followed by insightful exchange sessions with the management teams of the
aforementioned venues on topics relating to the vibrant tourism and hotel industry in Yunnan.
Subsequently, alumni were treated to a mesmerising theatrical performance entitled "Dynamic Yunnan". This grand musical show vividly showcased the wonderful life of the ethnic minorities (including the Yi people) of Southwest China and was one of the highlights of the tour. Alumni also enjoyed a visit to the UNESCO-listed Stone Forest, a natural wonder of the region.
On their visit to
the Yunnan Red Winery, alumni were welcomed warmly by the owner's family and given a tour of the winery, its facilities and storage areas. This tour was followed by a farm-to-table wine tasting, where alumni had the opportunity to sample still white and red wine, sparkling wine, sweet wine, and liquors. The evening culminated with a dinner featuring Yunnan ingredients that was a quintessential farm-to-table experience.
At meals throughout the tour, alumni had the chance to savour
authentic Yunnan cuisine, including the famous dish known as crossing-the-bridge noodles and roasted duck, with perfectly paired wines from the Yunnan Red Winery.
Before they headed back to Hong Kong, alumni enjoyed a Bonfire Dinner, complete with music and dance performances by ethnic minority groups. The joy, unity and camaraderie were palpable, leaving everyone with memories to cherish and serving as a fond farewell.
This tour to Yunnan provided unique opportunities for alumni
to make new memories and to forge new connections. The SHTM is proud of the SHTMAA for arranging such an amazing activity and looks forward to many more inspirational events being organised for alumni in the future.
