ACHIEVEMENTS AND RECOGNITION


Prof Haiyan Song and Mr Bowen Sun, Executive Secretary of Trip.com Group Institute and General Manager of Inbound Tourism, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 13 October 2024, enhancing their academic and research collaboration. In addition, Prof Haiyan Song signed the Yunji Technology Hotel Digital Intelligence Joint Innovation Lab Research Collaborative Agreement on behalf of the School with Mr Yunpeng Xie, Vice President of Yunji Technology Co., Ltd. This agreement will foster innovation in the industry.
Mr Nigel Lee, student in the BSc (Hons) in Hotel and Tourism Management (Hotel Management) programme, won 2nd place in the Young Waiter category at the Young Chef Young Waiter Young Mixologist Hong Kong Competition 2024 on 11 October.
The award ceremony for the SHTM's "Smart Events of the Future" Competition for Secondary School Students was held on 8 October 2024. The awardees were as follows:
  • Champion – A student team from Island School
  • 1st Runner Up – A student team from the HKFYG Lee Shau Kee College
  • 2nd Runner Up – A student team from St. Paul's Convent School
At the ceremony, the SHTM expressed its sincere appreciation to all the participants for demonstrating their creative talents. The level of engagement in and enthusiasm for the competition was truly inspiring, with registration exceeding 80 secondary school students. Each entry made a unique contribution to the excitement of the competition.
Recently Prof Haiyan Song, Prof Cathy Hsu and Dr Eric Chan of the SHTM were recognised by Stanford University as among the world's top 2% of scientists throughout their careers in the field of "Sport, Leisure and Tourism". In addition, 12 SHTM faculty members were recognised as among the world's top 2% of scientists for the year 2023: Dean Kaye Chon, Prof Kam Hung, Prof Sam Kim, Prof Jinsoo Lee, Prof Mimi Li, Prof Honggen Xiao, Dr Alice Hon, Dr Daniel Leung, Dr Neil Li, Dr Ada Lo, Dr Vincent Tung and Dr Dan Wang.
D.HTM student Ms Zhao Ying, Bonnie received The Padma and Hari Harilela Scholarship 2023/24. The scholarship was established in 2011 by Dr Hari N. Harilela, head of the Harilela Group. The Harilela Group plays a significant role in the professional development of the hotel industry.
D.HTM student Ms Zhang Jiarong, Judy received the Prof Bob McKercher Scholarship. This scholarship assists students pursuing the D.HTM programme offered by the SHTM in Hong Kong.
SHTM faculty members were awarded for excellent performance in their fields.
  • Prof Sam Kim was honoured with the SHTM Research Excellence Award (Outstanding Researcher).
  • Dr Faye Hao was bestowed the SHTM Research Excellence Award (Outstanding Young Researcher).
SHTM staff members successfully obtained National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) grants. Funding was awarded for Dr Neil Li's project "Influencing Factors and Mechanisms of Micro, Small and Medium Tourism Enterprises' Survival and Resilience in the VUCA Environment: Analysis Integrating Multi-source Heterogeneous Big Data"; Dr Hanyuan Zhang's project "Research on Tourists' Voluntary Carbon Offset Behaviour Mechanism Based on Mental Accounting in the Context of the 'Dual Carbon' Goals"; and Dr Yuchen Xu's project "Investigating the Stigma Magnification Effect and Its Causal Mechanisms in the Hospitality Industry: A Perspective on Negative Meta-Stereotypes".
Dr Michael Lin was honoured with the "Alumni Award – Emerging Professional (Graduate Programmes)" by his alma mater, The Penn State School of Hospitality Management and Penn State Hotel and Restaurant Society.
Ms Jane Park, Assistant Manager – F&B Revenue Management Operations at Hotel ICON and 2021 graduate of the BSc in Hotel Management programme, received the PATA Face of the Future 2024 award. The award recognises her exceptional initiative and leadership and her unwavering commitment to advancing the tourism industry in the Asia Pacific region.
Colleagues at the SHTM have been ranked amongst the world's top tourism scholars throughout their careers by ScholarGPS, a leading online source for the analysis of scholarly activity across regions and disciplines. At the institutional level, the School was also ranked number 1 worldwide for its lifetime contribution in the tourism specialty. The faculty members recognised by ScholarGPS for their lifelong achievements are Prof Cathy Hsu, Prof Haiyan Song, Dean Kaye Chon, Prof Honggen Xiao, Prof Kam Hung, Dr Catherine Cheung, Dr Vincent Tung, Dr Norman Au, Dr Ada Lo, Dr Daniel Leung, Dr Karin Weber, Prof Mimi Li and Dr Tony Tse.
Prof Haiyan Song has been appointed as one of the 16 members of the expert advisory group for the high-quality development of tourism in Hainan.
Prof Sam Kim was recognised with the ICHRIE Lifetime Research Achievement Award at the 2024 ICHRIE Global Conference held on 24-26 July in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, recognising his lifetime contributions to outstanding scholarship and research in hospitality and tourism.
