ACHIEVEMENTS AND RECOGNITION
Dr Peng Shen, Founder, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer, Waterdrop Inc., a 2022 graduate of the Doctor of Hotel and Tourism Management programme, received the Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award (Entrepreneurial Achievement) 2024 at the award presentation ceremony on 16 December.

At the same ceremony, The Hon. Perry Yiu, Legislative Council Member (Tourism) of the Hong Kong SAR Government and Chairman of China Travel Service (Hong Kong) Limited, a 2015 graduate of MSc in International Hospitality Management programme, received the Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award (Professional Achievement) 2024.
Prof Yang Yang, Professor and Department Chair at the School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management at Temple University and 2010 graduate of the Master of Philosophy in Hotel and Tourism Management programme, received the PolyU Graduate School Outstanding Research Postgraduate Young Alumni Award 2024 at the award presentation ceremony on 18 December.
Dr Jimmy Chiang, Deputy Director-General of the Office for Attracting Strategic Enterprises, Hong Kong SAR Government, a 2013 graduate of the Doctor of Hotel and Tourism Management programme, received the PolyU SHTM Outstanding Alumni Award (Professional Achievement) 2024 at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University's 30th Congregation (SHTM), held on 31 October 2024.
Four SHTM graduates received awards at this year's Congregation.
  • Dr Terrence Kong received the Best Ph.D. Thesis Award 2023/24 for his thesis "Emotional Experiences in Red Tourism: An Affective Practice Approach".

  • Dr Patthawee Insuwanno received the Best D.HTM Thesis Award 2023/24 for his thesis "Five Senses as Sources of Escapism, Immersion, and Health Perception in Wellness Spa Experience".

  • Mr Jingbo Xi received the Best MSc Dissertation Award 2023/24 for his thesis "How Hotel Cover Pictures Influence Consumers' Willingness to Pay: A Comparison of Utilitarian and Hedonic Value".

  • Mr Xiaoyu Tang received the Best Undergraduate Honours Thesis Award 2023/24 for his thesis "The Impact of Mergers and Acquisitions on Online Travel Agency Stock Prices: An Events Analysis".

Prof Haiyan Song and Prof Geraint Howells, Executive Dean of the College of Business, Public Policy and Law of University of Galway, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 9 December 2024 to foster academic and research collaboration as well as a student exchange agreement.
PolyU and China Travel Service (Holdings) Hong Kong Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 13 November 2024 to nurture tech talent and promote the application of cutting-edge technology in the tourism industry. This collaboration aims to propel the development of technology-empowered tourism through industry–academia–research collaboration.
