FH Departments to Offer New Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes

To meet evolving societal needs, CBS, CC and ENGL will offer new undergraduate programmes in speech therapy, Chinese history and culture, and health communication in the 2023/24 academic year.
BA (Hons) / BSc (Hons) Scheme in Language Sciences, Translation and Speech Therapy
The Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies (CBS) will launch a 4-year undergraduate scheme entitled BA (Hons) / BSc (Hons) Scheme in Language Sciences, Translation and Speech Therapy in the academic year 2023/24. Besides the existing programme BA (Hons) in Linguistics and Translation, two additional programmes will be offered under the Scheme, namely BSc (Hons) in Language Sciences and Analytics (BScLSA) and BSc (Hons) in Speech Therapy (BScST).
BSc (Hons) in Language Sciences and Analytics (BScLSA) provides students with interdisciplinary training in areas including language sciences, quantitative data analytics, computer programming and computational linguistics. With the skills in utilising analytic tools and performing quantitative analyses on language data, BScLSA graduates can generate predictions and provide insight for business and/or administrative decision making in various sectors of society (e.g. business development, marketing, journalism and media, education, academic research, and public services).
Based on the success of the Master of Speech Therapy programme, BSc (Hons) in Speech Therapy (BScST) offers a unique approach to education and training in Cantonese, Mandarin and English, addressing speech therapy in both Chinese and bilingual contexts. Graduates are equipped to practise as speech therapists in different service settings, such as the Hospital Authority, non-government organisations, special and mainstream schools, and private clinics, as well as other community service providers.

BA (Hons) in Chinese History and Culture
The Department of Chinese Culture will launch the BA (Hons) in Chinese History and Culture programme in September 2023, which will be the first 4-year undergraduate programme of the Department, with an annual intake of 20. Focusing on the great length and richness of Chinese history and civilisation and designed with Hong Kong’s place in China and the world in mind, the programme will inherit the two important features of the existing two-year programme of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Bilingual Interdisciplinary Chinese Studies: first, it is interdisciplinary, and its curriculum not only covers various humanities disciplines such as history, literature, art, and religious studies, but also crosses the boundaries of humanities, social sciences, and sciences; second, it is bilingual, with 60% of the subjects taught in Chinese (Putonghua), and the rest in English.

Master of Health Communication Programme Addresses Challenges in Healthcare and Health policy
ENGL will be offering a new taught postgraduate programme – Master of Health Communication (MHC) in the 2023 academic year. The programme will be in part-time online mode and is the first programme of its kind in FH.
Healthcare and health policy face many new challenges in the contemporary world and health professionals and mangers need a thorough and in-depth knowledge of important aspects of health policy and governance, as well as the skills in effective communication with diverse healthcare stakeholders across different health contexts. The MHC programme explores the many facets of communication that are crucial for management, leadership, and interprofessional relations in healthcare. It will bring together linguistics, psychology, health informatics and advances in computer science to create a strong interdisciplinary focus on health and communication as these relate to health professionals and health consumers.
The MHC programme is unique because it concentrates on the diverse role communication plays in management, leadership and interprofessional relations in healthcare. Prof. Stefano Occhipinti, Programme Leader of the MHC said, “Specifically developed for practitioners in Asia, the programme will provide a uniquely Asian perspective to the global healthcare system and especially as it applies Hong Kong. We will equip students with the diverse practical knowledge and skills that are critical to healthcare management.”
