【 #WeArePolyU – Transmitting a legacy】PolyU has nurtured generations of research talents over the years. Check out the video to learn about the story of Prof. Yung Kai-leung, Chair Professor of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Mr Ko Sui-man, Senior Scientific Officer of Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, which demonstrates how two generations of PolyU researchers and alumni share the same sense of belonging and devotion to the University in their pursuit of research excellence.
Prof. Yung enrolled at the then Hong Kong Polytechnic 50 years ago, before going on to the UK for further studies. After obtaining a doctorate degree, he returned to his alma mater to teach and to devote himself to space engineering research. Not only did Prof. Yung impart professional engineering knowledge to his student Mr Ko, he also passed on a spirit of scientific research. After obtaining a Master’s degree from PolyU, Mr Ko joined Prof. Yung's research team and has remained a team member until now. The two of them have worked hand in hand, using their knowledge to foster development in aerospace science. They have been involved in aerospace projects including development of the “Surface Sampling and Packing System” on the Chang’e 5 that recently accomplished the tasks of automatic sample collection and packaging on the lunar surface. They also developed and manufactured the “Mars Landing Surveillance Camera”, one of the key instruments onboard the Mars spacecraft in the Nation’s first Mars mission - Tianwen-1.
