President’s Newsletter for Students
April 2023

Dear Students

I am pleased to note that all COVID-related social-distancing measures in Hong Kong that impacted our campus operations have now been removed. I’d like to wholeheartedly thank students, staff, alumni and members of the wider PolyU community for their strong unity and support during the fight against the pandemic. With the removal of restrictions, our teaching and other activities have fully returned to normal.

We recently hosted the third President’s Sharing Session with Students. I sincerely thank all students for participating in the sharing session, both onsite and online. Your opinions and feedback are highly valued, and I hope to see even more students joining us in future sharing sessions as we work towards advancing the University to the next level of excellence.

Taking this opportunity, I would also like to offer my sincerest congratulations to PolyU’s Sports Teams for their impressive results at the Inter-collegiate Annual Athletic Meet, organised by The University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China. They snatched the Men’s Team Overall First Runners-up, Women’s Team Overall First Runners-up and Overall Team Championship titles. I applaud the perseverance and dedication of our athletes.

Last but not least, I wish all students the best in the upcoming examination period, where I am sure your hard work and determination will pay off!

Best Regards

Jin-Guang Teng
President

Outstanding Student Award and Presidential Student Leadership Award 2022/23

Congratulations! The Outstanding Student Award Scheme has been running annually to honour final-year students with great character, academic excellence, exceptional attainments in extra-curricular activities and a passion for making positive changes to society. This year, a total of 28 well-rounded students were selected as outstanding students at the departmental, faculty/school and university levels. You may click here to learn more about the awardees.

A new initiative, the Presidential Student Leadership Award, has also been launched this academic year, to recognise our student leaders who possess, display, and apply exemplary leadership qualities and skills, as well as to encourage students to develop their full potential. A total of 27 students received the Award this year.

I was happy to join the Award Presentation Ceremony for both awards in March. I took the opportunity to remind the awardees that they are key players in building a brighter future for Hong Kong, our Nation and the world.

‘No Poverty Land’ – Talk by Ms Janis Chan

Recently, media professional Ms Janis Chan held a talk titled ‘No Poverty Land’ under the Dean of Students Talk Series 2022/23 ‘Together We Dream, We Fly’. Ms Chan produced a highly-praised documentary series ‘No Poverty Land’, which focused on the Chinese government’s poverty alleviation efforts in the most deprived regions in China. She was then selected as an ‘Inspirational Role Model’ by the Touching China Awards in 2021.

During the talk, Ms Chan shared her experiences and personal growth in producing the documentary, and encouraged young people to pursue their aspirations and make positive contributions to society. I hope that students will be inspired by her sharings, further broadening their perspectives.

Cultivating a Caring and Inclusive Campus Environment

PolyU is committed to helping students with special educational needs (SEN) adapt to campus life and promoting effective learning through different support measures. This year, the Student Affairs Office organised a series of activities in the Limitless Festival with support from various non-governmental organisations. I hope that the event will foster a caring and inclusive culture on campus and facilitate students with SEN to integrate into the PolyU community.

Anti-scam Seminar for Students

With an increase in the number of fraudulent cases targeting Mainland university students studying in Hong Kong, the Police Anti-Deception Coordination Office, the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, and PolyU collaborated to hold a “Beware of Scams! Join us to Combat Deceptions” seminar in February, to strengthen students’ awareness in this regard. Prevention advice on various fraud techniques was provided during the seminar. There were also information booths and face-to-face consultation services at the event.

“INSPIRE” Mentorship Programme Annual Gathering

We held the “INSPIRE” Mentorship Programme Annual Gathering in January, connecting more than 250 mentors and mentees to celebrate their invaluable mentoring journeys. The theme of this year’s gathering was “Celebration for Futurists”. Guests shared their insights on future talent trends, and provided advice to students on how to prepare themselves for the workforce.

The “INSPIRE” Mentorship Programme aims to enhance the personal, academic, and professional development of students through providing an extensive network of role models and prominent leaders from the PolyU community. All undergraduate and postgraduate students of any discipline are eligible to become “INSPIRE” mentees. Click here to learn about the programme.
