Title of project:
Neuroprotective Effects of Lycium Barbarum in an Ocular Normal Tension Model of Glaucoma under Glutamate Induced Toxicity and Endothelin-1 Induced Optic Neuropathies Conditions
Synopsis:
Normal Tension Glaucoma (NTG) is a type of open angle glaucoma having intraocular pressure within the normal range of 10-21 mmHg characterised by the presence of optic neuropathy, retinal nerve fibre layer thinning, visual field defects, etc. and ultimately may result in irreversible loss of vision. Current surgical and therapeutical strategies primarily aiming to reduce the intraocular pressure are not significantly effective for NTG as these measures do not halt the neurodegenerative effects on the retina. Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) has demonstrated its supplemental neuroprotective effects on various types of optic neuropathies, such as chronic ocular hypertension and acute ocular hypertension models. This study primarily focuses on assessing and correlating the structural, functional and neurological changes in ocular normal tension glaucoma animal model with LBP treatment under glutamate induced toxicity and endothelin-1 induced optic neuropathies conditions. This study will help to understand the role and effectiveness of LBP in intraocular pressure (IOP) independent model as well as its potentiality as a neuroprotective treatment in glaucoma management.
