Title of project:
Derivation of ocular rigidity metric through ocular compression and its implication in myopia
Synopsis:
Traditionally ocular rigidity is measured by Schiøtz tonometry using the pressure-volume nomogram proposed by Friedenwald. Schiøtz tonometry is rarely performed in clinical practice, and the Friedenwald equation was derived using cadaver eyes. In the current study, ocular rigidity will be derived based on ocular compression through digital pressure on the eyeball. This can be an in vivo and physiological method to study ocular rigidity. Ocular rigidity in different levels of myopia will be studied. Corneal hysteresis measured by a bidirectional applanation process will be used as a reference to compare with this new ocular rigidity metric. With the advancement of optical coherence tomography, ocular compression will also be applied to study lamina cribrosa deformation. This may reveal different lamina cribrosa biomechanics in myopia to better understand the pathophysiology of high myopia associated glaucoma.
