Title of project:
Treatment effect of traditional Chinese medicines on diabetes and related ocular complications
Synopsis:
Diabetes mellitus is a leading global health issue that adversely alters the physiology of multiple vital organs in human body, consequentially increasing the morbidity and mortality rate of the affected population. Existing pharmacological treatments focus heavily on the control of blood glucose level and potentially impose a range of undesirable side effects including hypoglycaemic coma, and hepatorental disturbance.
Traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) are promising alternatives treatment due to their anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and hypoglycaemic properties. My research direction is to investigate the potential protective effect of TCMs on the eye and underlying mechanisms against the ocular complications associated with diabetes. Ultimately, we aim to develop a novel and effective treatment regime for diabetes patients.
