Combined atropine with orthokeratology in childhood myopia control (AOK) - A randomized controlled trial
Synopsis:
Both orthokeratology (ortho-k) and atropine have been demonstrated to be effective in slowing myopic progression in children. Ortho-k has been shown to slow myopia progression by 40-50%. Although 1% atropine has been shown to be relatively more effective in slowing myopia progression, the treatment results in significant side-effects. A 0.01% concentration atropine, however, has almost negligible side effects and most patients can tolerate the treatment well. The mechanisms of both atropine and ortho-k in slowing myopia are not clearly understood but they exert their effects via different pathways. The aim of this study is to investigate if there is an additional effect on retardation of myopia progression by using a combined 0.01% atropine and ortho-k versus ortho-k alone treatment. This study is a collaboration between the School of Optometry of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and Department of Ophthalmology of The University of Hong Kong.
