Title of project:
Myopia control using optimized optical defocus in schoolchildren – a randomized double-masked control trial
Synopsis:
When correcting myopia by traditional spectacle lens, on-axis light will focus on fovea, while paraxial light will focus behind the retina leading to peripheral hyperopic defocus. And, peripheral hyperopic defocus could lead to myopia progression. On the contrary, myopia progression could be controlled by inducing myopic defocus at the peripheral retina in animal studies. In our current study, we modified a defocus incorporated soft contact lens aimed to obtain better myopia control effects.
This study is highly relevant to Hong Kong and even Greater China where the prevalence of myopia is extremely high. The long term benefit would be preventing and reducing myopia to a level that will minimize the risk of myopia related retinal complications, and thereby minimize the enormous burden on the economic cost and health care system.
