"After obtaining our Bachelor’s degree in 2002, we pursued the postgraduate study in the School of Optometry under the supervision of Dr. Henry Chan. This was one of the most important decisions we have ever made. Our PhD study mainly focused on investigating the early retinal electrophysiological changes in glaucoma and retinitis pigmentosa, which is crucial to uncover the mechanism of these eye diseases. Upon completing our postgraduate degree in 2009, we continued our postdoctoral training, and in the meantime, we also obtained the Fellowship of American Academy of Optometry. Although the path of PhD study is rugged and research seems to be an endless work, the knowledge and experience gained in these few years have laid a solid foundation for our future endeavours.

In 2010, we made another important decision that we established an optometry clinic equipped with state-of-the-art instrument in Causeway Bay, providing comprehensive eye examination to the general public. Although the job nature is different from our previous engagement in research, likewise we can promote primary eye care to the community.

Currently, we are working as Visiting Clinical Associates in the School through which we can share our experience in clinical practice and research with students."

"When I look back to the days when I was a student at the School of Optometry, I have nothing but the fondest memories of the relationships I had with the academic staff. The mutual respect between students and staff allowed for an excellent and rewarding learning environment. It was under their guidance that I was able to learn what is required to be a professional optometrist. Upon graduating, I became a partner in a private practice where I was able to practice primary eye care on a full time basis.

Being a partner of a business allows me to choose the way I practice, which is to provide comprehensive eye care to maintain the eye health for my clients. Now I am constantly developing loyal and friendly relationships with my clients who appreciate and respect my expertise. I think the most gratifying aspect of my job is to know that my professional advice has made a difference to the well being of my clients. The School of Optometry has certainly inspired me to be my own boss, to practice Optometry the way it is supposed to be practiced, and to treat my clients with respect and care. As I now return to the School as a visiting clinical associate, I hope to instill the same inspiration into future optometrists."

"When I chose to study Optometry at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, I just wanted to enter into a profession with a satisfactory income and stable working environment. Unexpectedly, I was promoted to be a Branch Manager within two years of graduation from PolyU. With the support from the company, I started my franchised practice. It brightened my life with a sense of responsibility. I can now develop my career where not only I can put into practice what I have learnt, but also help other people in the process. "After graduation, I worked in a private practice for one and a half years. In 2003, I started my postgraduate study in the University of Hong Kong (HKU) under the supervision of Prof. Kwok Fai So of the Department of Anatomy and Dr. Henry Chan, the School of Optometry of PolyU. In my four-year PhD study, I focused on investigating the neuroprotection and electroretinography of retinal ganglion cells in animal models of glaucoma and optic nerve injury. Now I am working as a postdoctoral fellow in the Eye Institute of HKU. My current research interest is neuroprotection in retinal ischaemia and diabetic retinopathy. Being a graduate of Optometry is very favorable to my postgraduate study and career. The undergraduate programme in PolyU includes a broad spectrum of knowledge of the eye and ocular diseases. It not only gives me the qualification of a registered optometrist, but also lays down the foundation for the road of research. Most importantly, the knowledge I gained in the programme is for a lifetime. "
