Anti Deception Full frame photo 1200 x 600With an increase in the number of cases of fraud targeting Mainland students in Hong Kong, the Anti-Deception Coordination Centre (ADCC), the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR and PolyU collaborated to hold a seminar on the topic “Beware of Scams! Join Us to Combat Deceptions” on 25 February 2023, in the hope of raising students’ alertness. Around 1,000 Mainland students from 14 tertiary institutions attending the seminar were appointed as “Anti-Scam Ambassadors” to assist the police in disseminating anti-deception messages to their schoolmates and friends.

Student Talk Series on Deception and Anti-scam Alerts by CMSA & SAO

Student Talk Series 500x350As part of a joint series with the Chinese Mainland Student Association (CMSA), SAO invited speakers from the ADCC of the Hong Kong Police Force to deliver a talk about scam prevention at the Global Student Hub on 13 October 2022. During the talk, the police officers exposed some common deceptive tactics and scammers’ main targets.

Prof. Albert Chan, Dean of Students, encouraged CMSA to continue its efforts in building a caring student network to strengthen peer connections, thereby minimising the chance of students falling prey to scammers.

Anti-scam Information for Non-local Students

Antiscam Information 500x350On-site anti-scam activities aside, SAO also strives to provide useful information at the fingertips of non-local students who are most vulnerable to lurking frauds. On the website specifically for first-year PolyU students, anti-deception information and relevant police contacts are made available for students’ quick reference. We hope that with the provision of such information, non-local students who are new to both the University and Hong Kong have access to credible advice on avoiding common types of fraud, thus enjoying their new lives with peace and joy.
