Summary

Abstract

Ultrasound tomography holds potential in various areas of non-destructive evaluation (NDE), such as corrosion mapping and materials characterization. However, traditional methods have borrowed concepts from radiographic CT and overlooked the effects of refraction and diffraction, leading to significant limitations in image quality. This presentation aims to emphasize the significance of accurately capturing the underlying physics to produce high-resolution and accurate images.

Speaker

Dr Peter Huthwaite completed his PhD in the NDE group at Imperial College London in 2012, where he worked on breast tomography for cancer detection. He continued in the group and became an academic (faculty member) in 2015. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer and then Reader in 2021. Dr Huthwaite leads imaging research within the group, developing solutions for high-resolution guided wave tomography and other inversion schemes using both bulk and guided ultrasonic waves. He has also developed the high-speed finite element ultrasound simulation package Pogo, which has sold licenses worldwide.
