Prof. Gilman Siu Kit-hang is one of the PolyU young scholars making a difference in fighting COVID-19. His rapid whole-genome sequencing technique is a groundbreaking discovery that greatly speeded up the identification of transmission chains and improved diagnostic accuracy. Having provided a scientific basis for the government to formulate policy according to the fast-changing situation, he received the Outstanding Project Team on COVID-19 Research Award from the Food and Health Bureau in 2021. Focusing his research on microbial genomics, Prof. Siu has published over 50 peer-reviewed research papers in high-impact academic journals, such as Lancet Respiratory Medicine and Clinical Chemistry. He has also secured more than HK$40 million in external research grant funding over the past five years.
