“A small step each day makes a big difference.”
A graduate of the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Computing in 2007, Luo Wei-dong remembers vividly the time he spent studying at PolyU when SARS hit Hong Kong in 2003. Wearing a mask, he shuttled between laboratories, library, canteen and dormitory every day, sharing Hong Kong people’s Lion Rock Spirit of not succumbing to challenges.
The graduate training nurtured in him the entrepreneurial spirit of constant trying and resilience. Luo said it is his days at PolyU that shaped his perseverance in starting an enterprise from scratch. His business dream was inspired by the entrepreneurial environment at PolyU. He was ready for his own venture upon graduation from the University.
In 2011, noticing developers’ difficulty in despatching push notifications, he founded JIGUANG to offer them solutions. After eight years of dedicated work, his company accumulated trillions of data, and offered big data solutions including targeted marketing, financial risk management, and commercial geography through artificial intelligence. In 2019, JIGUANG opened up its data to developers to help them resolve issues related to vertical industries. Luo hopes that with the coming deep integration of mobile big data and artificial intelligence, JIGUANG can offer solutions for more social issues – as his original aspiration of creating the company.
Luo’s motto is “A small step each day makes a big difference”. Like a pawn in the Chinese chess game, even a small move he makes can be of strategic importance. Similarly, Luo believes that one can realise his dream as long as he clings to his original aspiration.
